Periods

This is in response to Cathie regarding post-removal bleeding. I have been pretty fortunate in that department. I am actually in the middle of my second period since the removal, and other than being heavy, everything is normal.

In your case, make sure you're monitoring the situation closely with your doctor. If you are having heavy bleeding and clots, I would also recommend taking iron supplements.

Keep us posted on how you're doing, and I hope that you feel better!

I am so glad you started this site. After reading into it, I had the IUD removed 2 weeks ago. My acne is clearing and I have lost 5 lbs already. I feel better now than I did the whole time I had the devil (IUD) in me. I walked out of the office the day of the removal feeling like a different woman. Instantly, I could tell a difference. I have bled off and on, but nothing bad, yet. How long will it be before I start bleeding bad? I am now taking Femcon Fe, the pill. Maybe thats why I haven't bled yet, because of the hormones. Keep us updated on your status. How much more weight have you lost? Are you feeling better?

Okay, so I have been bleeding/spotting straight since I had the IUD inserted almost 4 months ago, 8 weeks after my second little girl. I love/loved the thought of not having to deal with a pill, and I have severe Endo - and the cramping has been nothing like what I'm used to. I am losing a lot of hair, but I can chalk that up to post pregnancy. I am not losing weight that I should, but I've always had a slow metabolism. I do have mood swings, but I also was being treated for PPD pre-Mirena. NOW I've had my very first yeast infection EVER, treated that, but becoming itchy AGAIN.
I don't know what to do because I hate this bleeding (I actually bled through my pants at work the other day. It was a mix of blood and some other clear substance??) I was having spontaneous bad 'hemorrhages' for lack of a better term. They gave me a sono to see if it was in my muscle. It wasn't. My midwife told me to hold out, that maybe my body is trying to reject it harder -- and I WANT IT TO WORK!! But .. will the bleeding ever stop, is the hair loss because of post prego, and will I ever lose this weight (I was losing it quickly before I had the IUD inserted)
So there's my rant. I'm not sure what to do, or what to think. Any ideas?

I had a severe problem with the Mirena removal. I had it in for a year before deciding to take it out to become pregnant. I had mine taken out 7-2-08. By 7-10-08 I was bleeding through an OVERNIGHT pad every hour. Went to ER on friday, was released on Premarin and iron pills for blood loss. By Saturday, I was extremely pale, nauseous, and weak. Went back to ER, and was told I lost 2.5 more points in my blood count (was down to 7). Before I was even admitted Saturday night, I fell in the bathroom, started convulsing from shock of rapid loss of blood. I was given 3 units of blood from Sat late to early Sunday. After 3 units of blood transfused I was still at only 5.9! I was bleeding faster than I could be infused with the blood. I passed out three times Saturday night, and blood pressure dropped to 90/40, my normal being 120/70. I thought I was going to die. Sunday evening I had another D&C to stop the bleeding. It has since slowed, but doc put me on Hi Dose birth control pills. I finally was discharged last night. I was hoping to get pregnant soon. Now I am not sure if I ever will. I will NEVER have any sort of hormonal implant in my body ever again. I don't even want to use the pill, except that it is meant to regulate my hormonal imbalance. The thought that I could have bled to death in my sleep Saturday night (if not admitted to the hospital) scared the crap out of me. I wish Mirena would have THAT warning on their label!

Wow! I cant believe what I am reading! I am 39 and have a very active sex life with my husband. We have 3 kids and right now, dont want more, but we may change our minds. I had Mirena inserted in August. Immediately I started to experience all of the side effects that made me get off the pill numerous times; weight gain, bloating, feeling crazy, etc. I decided to have it removed. I had to argue with my GYN and her staff to even get an appointment and they all tried to talk me out of it, to te point of me threatening to go elsewhere. Finally they rellented and took it out. The removal was uncomplicated and not painful, unlike insertion which hurt like a MF. So, I had it removed 12 days ago and I have been bleeding heavily and clotting sometimes to the point of running through a jumbo OB combined with a jumbo pad. I have only made it through about 2 of those 12 nights without waking up in a puddle. I started to get alarmed and my husband urged me to call my GYN, even though I have had this feeling that its semi normal. I called and they told me it was normal and to take Aleve as a suppressant for bleeding (news to me) but I did and it sort of slowed it down, but not altogether. That call was made 4 days ago and last night my husband said, Im taking you to the ER, this is NOT normal and im afraid. I talked him out of it. I still am not too worried, but wondering, until I decided to get online and see what other woman are dealing with. Holy Shit! am I happy I did. A) I dont want to deal with my doc B) All I am getting is bleeding, no cramping, no light headed-ness, but I have lost a shit load of blood. I read one girl bled for 30 days and then on your blog, a girl was really hemmoraging and then hospitalized. Im not THAT bad but its still not OK. I am curouis if anybody can tell me how the bleeding stops?

Your focus is on the weight and I can relate. Last year I lost 100 lbs. Yes, 100. So, needless to say, the weight gain that came with Mirena was not welcomed for me at all. The heavy bleeding is currently overshadowing my upset about the extra lbs, but one of the main reasons I had it removed was becuase of how upset I was getting about having to go back up to my fat jeans after all of my f'ing hard work. I was a size 28 - dropped to a size 16, now thanks to Mirena Im back to size 18. For skinny girls, I realize this seems still heavy, but I used to weigh 280 lbs, so im sexy at size 16. Anyway, here's hoping that this will all soon be a memory. Thanks for listening

I have just removed the Mirena from by body after 1 1/2 years of constant spotting and life of hell.
Two days after removal I started to bleed very heavily, huge clots of blood thinking I was giving birth again. Very frightening... After going back to the Gyno a couple of times he said that it was nothing to worry about but one week later I am still bleeding heavily. No one warned me about this reaction, not even on the Mirena sight. After investigating further on the web I found a few sights with the same symptoms so I feel a little better. If anyone wants some advice THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU INSERT THE MIRENA IUD.

I had the Mirena inserted on 13th Dec 2008 after my GP told me it would be just the thing to sort out the pain I was having due to having cysts on my ovaries. I am 37. I bled basically everyday after insertion enough to have to wear tampons and pads at the same time. Then around New Year I had what looked like an infection with a lot of discharge. I was told it was normal an not to worry. I've put on 7 kgs in the 7 weeks it was in for! Then I started getting contractions! The pain was constant and lasted 4 days. It was just like I was in labour (I have 4 children). I spoke to the Gyn and she told me to come in. Basically she said it obviously wasn't working and asked if I wanted it out. I said YES! It took 15 minutes for her to find it as the strings had disappeared (another concern I had earlier as both I and my partner couldn't find them). She asked me if I could bear the pain whilst she went fishing for it longer, otherwise I would have to have a general anaestetic and have a hysteroscopy (sp?). I thought 'no way'!She eventually found it and got it out. She said there was a lot of blood but it will settle down. Now it's 2 days after the removal and I can't believe I'm still bleeding HEAVILY! Clots a plenty and bright red blood that's coming out like water from a tap. Soaking through maxi pads in around 20 minutes (expensive exercise).Starting to feel giddy. Not sure about pain on right side. Not game enough to take ibuprofen as will thin blood and maybe make bleeding worst. Wondering about the clots though. They're not going to go anywhere else in my body are they?? The whole bright red blood thing is freaking me out slightly!

Five Years!!
Its been five years and 5mths since i had a Marina put in my unterus. and after getting fed waiting for the Hospital to even get me on a list for removal I finally went back to my doctor and told her to remove it.
For the five years the IUD never gave me any problems except for the first 6months which I was warned about. I did get fed up with the constant spotting or near miss periods in that time but I waited for the 6th month to come and they were right the spotting and day here and three days there every week stopped on the 6th month. I have gained weight but have no idea if it was due to the IUD. Maybe?
I just had it removed last week and have been bleeding ever since to the point that all i can smell is fresh blood, hmmm is this normal or is it my old periods returning only time will tell. I wonder how long i have to put up with the bleeding, will I be told ^ to wait 6 months maybe for my body to return to Normal. But whats normal, I may be going through menopause but i have to wait a month before they can test me. If I'm not then Do I get another Marina? who knows hopefully the bleeding will stop.

Holy crow, after reading all these, I guess I was one of the fortunate ones.
The only side effect I had was the inability to lose weight. I had it inserted 3 months after I had my son in '07, and was able to come down from 140 to 125 in that time (prior to insertion), but once I had it inserted I struggled with losing the last 15 lbs. (I am very petite). I had it removed a month ago (Aug '09) because we've decided to try for a 3rd, removal was nothing more than a bad cramp feeling, and I bled (period like) for 5 days, but nothing heavy. Waiting at the moment to see if I am pregnant because I am 3 days late, but I am not sure if my bleeding was due to the removal or if it was my period. I menstrated while on the IUD but it was very sporadic and unpredictable (which was horrible). How soon did anyone who had it removed begin a 'regular' cycle?

Anonymous said...

I had my 1st mirena inserted after the birth of my second daughter. I had a regular IUD before but it was causing very heavy periods and my doctor suggested I switch to the Mirena. Yeah, it hurts A LOT putting it in! After a while I started to feel ill. Went to my doctor's office after a couple weeks of feeling ill. My doctor had a resdient with her that day and the resident took charge of my care. She took a urine sample and sent me away, said she didn't know what the problem was. Didn't hear anything from them, assumed everything was fine. Another month went by, and I went to the birth control clinic who put the IUD in, and said that if I didt know better, I would have thought I was pregnant because this sure feels like morning sickness(but really, why would I be I have an implanted birth control device?). .....sure enough the device had migrated and I was pregnant. I was sent around to three different doctor's offices that day trying to retrieve the IUD, with no luck. So after an ultra sound, an internal ultra sound, lots of pain, poking and proding and still no luck they had to book me in to get it removed under local anestetic. And because the fetus was sitting right next to the UID they had to terminate the pregnancy. They said they could not tell me if the fetus would develop properly, or if it would even survive, given the fact that it was right next to the IUD as it was developing.

So because there is only a .02% chance of that happening I figured I would be fine to get another Mirena. I had my 2nd Mirena inserted 5 1/2 years ago. I had break through bleeding for several months, but eventually my period completely stopped. All in all it was very nice to not have a period for 5 years. I did still get grumpy and a bit crampy around the time I should have been having my period. I suspected it caused me to gain / struggle with my weight. I developed horrible acne 50 times worse than anything I had growing up. So when it was time to take it out I was happy.

That was March 9th and I still have not gotten a period (8 months later!). I'm currently waiting for an ultra sound. My doctor has given me progesterone to try and force my body to have a period and still nothing. If I was wanting to get pregnant I would be really really chocked.

Would I get another Mirena? no

I have had mine in for 4 years. I have argued with my doctor for 3 years to remove mine and he refused. Today I had enough and told him he would take it out or I would. I went from being a mommy who was a awesome multitasker with a high stress job that I loved. To being an unemployed Mommy who can't even watch my kids and wash a load of towels. It is one or the other not both :( I could run circles around everyone I knew. Now, I get asked all the time are you ok, you look sick, are you bipolar, and so forth. I have lost so much hair I have to clean my brush and drain everytime I use them. I can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Most days I feel like I have been replaced by a crazy alien. One minute I feel wide awake next I fall deep asleep. It scares me. My husband is majorly concerned and said he didn't even know what to expect me to do next. This thing has really ruined me and my life :(

I have looked up numerous webpages to see how long this would last but didn't find a lot of answers to the length of time. So here is what happened with me...

I had the Mirena for almost 3 years. After having the Mirena removed, it started lightl but that night I started bleeding heavy. I had clots but nothing bigger than maybe a quarter or so. I bled heavy for almost two weeks. I am hoping that as of today I have stopped! :) The mirena worked for birth control, but it threw my hormones off completely. Mood swings, night sweats, etc. I also had false pregnancy symptoms, such as actually feeling like a baby was MOVING inside of me. I have been pregnant-and given birth 3 times, I know what that feels like!

So I have been reading all your comments and have had both a positive and negative experience with Mirena. I had it placed 8 weeks after my second child was born. I really liked the idea of not having to think about taking a pill, change ring etc. So I was all prepared for the pain with insertion but really felt nothing, thank God. I had the crazy on off irregular periods for 6 months- a year. Then I spent approx 2.5 years with no period, very nice. Heading into my 3rd year with Mirena my periods started slowly returning (boo). Light periods at first and then moderate to heavy basiclly a normal monthly period. I recently went for my annual gyn appt. she said things looked good the string was visible ,and in the spring my 5 years would be up , did I want another Mirena placed? I said yes . So for the month of November I got my regular period in the first week followed by a few days of discharge, then randomly started bleeding again. Only this isn't period this is bright red watery bleeding now going through 3-5 regular pads for days ,on day 12 now. I have some minor pain on the right side nothing I would think anything of . I put a call in to see if I should be seen and the nurse said no the Dr. says its most likely just bleeding from the Mirena. Not sure if this means its causing bleeding or like the attchment sight is bleeding??? Call back only if I had signs of an infection. Well this has me really scared, I have never bleed bright red for days like this. It almost makes me think I am injured inside. Is my Mirena coming loose? I am scared to have sex with my husband because of this and really how long is a girl to wait on this. I do feel the strings and all seems to be in place as before. Now I am not so sure if I want another Mirena, I guess it depends how long this bleeding runs. By the way i am just curious if anyone elses partner says they can feel your strings during sex? My husband says he always has, not sure if he should be able too.

Hi,

I have used the coil quite happily for 5yrs but started to have light periods at the end. I then had a new coil fitted and had scary blood clots within a week. This settled down and the doctor said it was in the right position. However , my periods are getting worse and the other day had clots and flooding.

Has anyone has experience of this?

I got my Mirena removed on 12-12-11. On 12-13-11you I inserted my nuvaring. By 12-14-11i started bleeding heavy. Literally pouring out. I was going through pads every hour and a half. I started feeling dizzy and of glanced so I went to the ER. No help there. I am still bleeding heavy and I don't kno why. I have terrible cramps and back pain. I liked my Mirena besides the acne and cyst. But this is ridiculous.

Just found this site and I already just had Mirena removed after 2 months of constant abdominal cramping and constantly popping Advil for 2 months at maximum dosages. Also bled for all but 1 day while on Mirena - just as much as I was bleeding before. Now it's 1 day after the removal and I have the same gushing blood loss. I'm giving this a week and hoping it goes away. I'd like to go back to the patch but my GYN now tells me I can't use it b/c I'm 36. I call BS and think it's time to deal with a GYN who works with me instead of telling me it's either Mirena or Depo or hysterectomy. Uh no...

So I had the mirena placed 6 weeks after my second child was born in october 2010 and didnt really have any issues until november 2011. I had it removed on january 11, 2012 and started taking the BC pill. I started a period a couple days before I had it remove, brownish very light bleedin (only needed a panty liner) but the day after my husband and I had sex and after that I now have bright red, thin blood and am having to use tampons. It comes and goes too... Like I bled right after sex and into the next day then it just stopped. We had sex again last night and now I am bleeding again. I have had mild cramping but nothing like I was having while mirena was in. im hoping this is just because of the removal of it because I would like to feel normal again! Thats the whole reason I had it removed! I would like to get pregnant soon but I dont know if this unpredictable period wont stop! Has anyone else had any of these same issues? I did have implantation bleeding with my last child but I dont know how to tell the difference between that and just bleeding for no reason. Any suggestions would be helpful!?

Hello all! I had my Mirena removed 5 months ago for a different reason that I will fill you all I have on. I ha e three kids and I had always had the Perigard (the copper IUD with no hormones). I am only 27 and didn't want hormones. I decided to give in and see what Mirena was like. I only had it for 5 months, I felt terrible (weak, muscle-shakiness, hair loss) and my belly looked and felt like I was 4 months pregnant. I always felt like I needed a vitamin or something..I just felt rubbery. The last straw was when I had a liver check and my enzymes were high. My doctor asked what I had been taking????!!!!! I told my doc I didn't take any medicine at all, not even aspirin, and I only drink a little white wine once or twice a week.I didn't even think about the IUD. He told me to get checked again in 6 weeks and to not take anything and not drink any alcohol. I did just that and when I was retested my enzymes had gotten even worse. I was so upset. It was a girlfriend of mine who reminded me that I WAS on a medication ..... the MIRENA.
I had it removed 2 weeks later. I feel so much better! To all of you:
Your doctor DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT OR POWER TO REFUSE your request to stop a medication. Get the perigard (the copper IUD with no hormones).

I had my mirena taken out on nov 4 2012 it had caused my to develop (pids) pelvic imflamatory disease. I left the dr with just a little spotting by the time I got home it was coming out faster then I could get a tampon in. That lasted a week then the next month came and just like a period 28 days later I started bleeding again I had never had to use super tampons befor but I was bleeding so bad I was going threw supers like the were nothing. I have been bleeding every month but they are all over the place my last one was on day 30 and I just started again yesterday which was only on day 15. I'm bleeding so bad again and having the worst cramps of my life. Been thinking about getting pregnant but don't no how to try when everything is so out of wack. I had the IUD insert when I was 15 kept it till I was 19 which is now and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I gained over 30 lbs in the time of having it and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't loose the weight. How long did it take for one of you to get ur normal monthly cycle back and does the bleeding slow down?

I was on mirena for 7 months & bled very heavy with clots the whole time, each month I would only go a few days without bleeding, messed up several pair of pants while at work & ALWAYS wore black in fear I'd go through pads. I had it removed Jan. 20th, had a period for 5 days 21st through the 26th on February 3 bled maybe a half of day & spotted brownish liquid for two days after, now I'm 14 days late. How could I go from bleeding three times a month for 7 months to NOTHING?!?!? CONFUSED!!!! Could I be pregnant. I have had unprotected sex during & after.

Last week I went in to remove my IUD that I have had for 3yrs now. There was a problem, the doctor could not locate the strings and after horrible dilation of my cervix still nothing. He did an ultrasound to make sure the IUD was still in place and it had moved higher up on my uterus. I went in today for a 2nd attempt to remove it. I got my cervix numb so I wouldn't go through the pain I went through. Well after "digging" for it, no luck. Now I had an abdominal X-ray to locate the IUD and now I am going to require to be on general anesthia and make an inscision through my belly button....ugh!!! My reason from deciding to remove this horrible bc was because I developed acne on my face, constant bloated and feeling like I retained water causing swelling. I also gained 10lbs out of no where and having such a hard time losing it! I play soccer, workout 3-4 times a week and eat pretty clean. My mood swings are the worst part of this, I get irrated so easy and sometimes I feel like crying for no reason. I just want to feel normal again with no artificial hormones involved! After I am done with this nightmare, I'm getting my tubes tied since my husband is a big weenie to get a vasectomy.

Got Mirena Oct 18. Had mirena out 5 months later on Mar 13. Was told by the doc to expect spotting. Ha ha. By Mar 15 I was bleeding heavy with clots. By Mar 16 I was pouring blood with golf ball size clots. Called the doc, who said Advil slows bleeding. Took1600 mg Advil Mar 17. Bleeding slowed considerably but my stomache was burning from the Advil. So didn't take any Advil on Mar 18 and was back to pouring blood and passing huge clots. It's Mar 19 at its my 5th day of heavy clotty bleeding. I am scared. Went to the ER, sat for 7.5 hours to get an ultrasound that was ordered for me. Never got one -said they couldn't fit me in (yes, I live in Canada -Saskatchewan actually where you can easily bleed to death in a hospital. Free health care isn't so great when you can't get any health care). Was told they will call me in a day or two for an ultrasound. Meanwhile, if I faint I should o back. Ya right. I am scared. I am angry. My bleeding seems to slow and get better but then come back with a vengeance a few hours later. Why the hell am I bleeding like this? I am scared I have some kind of uterine cancer! I bled and spotted my 5 months with mirena too. I hate mirena. How can doctors not tell you this could happen?

Oh ladies....I am so thankful that all of you have logged on to share your stories. Thank you, and I am SO sorry to hear about all of your complications.

Mine is a similar story- had Mirena for 5 years, started adding up all of the things that were wrong with my body (severe back pain, migraines, leg cramps, extra 15 pounds i just could not loose, bowls issues), and finally figured out that it could be that darn IUD. Had it removed, and instantaneously felt better - especially with the back pain - it was gone!

Had it removed 11 days ago, and have been bleeding furiously for the past 8 days - huge clots, gushing when i sit down in the restroom, extra large tampon plus overnight pads both soaked in 2 hours, etc. There has been just minimal pain or cramping, for which i am SO thankful. Just a ton of blood.

Thank you for your stories - i will be keeping a watchful eye for signs of too much blood loss- or iron deficiency. I will also be looking into a second mortgage on our house to fund all of the tampons and pads that i am purchasing! :)
Hang in there, ladies! God Bless

I am so thankful to have found this site. I have only had the Mirena in for a month, but it is getting removed tomorrow. I am moody, feel like I'm having contractions and have a yeast infection. I applaud all the women who dealt with the side effects for years. I don't know how you did it. I am so hoping I don't have the bleeding issues, but I'm preparing for the worst.

I am going to have my mirena removed as soon as possible and am prepared for the heavy bleeding. I am wondering though, how long will the excessive bleeding last? Is there another bc method other than the pull that has been a successful alternative to mirena?

Im soo glad i found this blog page as i too have had hell on the mirena. Had mirena inserted just b4 getting a breast reduction. Doc removed 1.2 kgs 600g each side. Hoping to now lose some weight to inhance feeling lighter, well nooo, its been hell trying to lose weight eating healthy exercising and still putting on. Had mirena in for 6 mths, had no bleeding but the pain. It even effected my lower back, waking up in morn with sore loose back and just to pick the cat bowls up to give them brekkie was like how they tell u to pick up heavy things in the book, squat, pick up, stand up. Had mirena removed on friday and the bleeding started sunday and is just getting heavy and bright red which for someone who has enjoyed no bleeding for years ( was on depo provera shot which thinking highly of going back on)not much fun lucky i was a scout and as they say Be Prepared do have pads in the house but hate the feeling of leaking so buying some tampons which havnt used in over 9 yrs.Have read some people broken up because of mirena, well hubby and i had strong words as damn thing made me have lack of motivation. The more i read these posts, the more it confirms what i think of doctors which is they can learn about things from books but it doesnt mean they know how it affects individul people.Thank you to all who have written things about the mirena as it has helped me know im not the only one but wish id taken the time to read up about it first but then i know i still would have wanted to find out for myself but at least i could of known the symptoms was from the mirena and not me just being really lazy which is not like me anyway. Oh by the way, feeling much better about myself already and looking forward to the future and going to the gym.

Whew! I'm not crazy after all. I had the Mirena inserted at the beginning of February. My initial desire was for an ablation, as I am trying to combat heavy, painful periods; but I was talked out of it and into a Mirena by my Dr. I have already had my kids, I'm 37, and my husband has been snipped. My life has been hell since the day of insertion! I had cramps from day one, and have taken some sort of pain killer daily. At least my periods were predictable. I bled EVERY DAY with the Mirena. My sex life/desire for my husband DIED, causing major stress where there has never been any before. I just felt like I was turning into a bitter, old hag, constantly bleeding and in discomfort. After being turned away in March because I hadn't had it in long enough per the doctor, I finally got it out two days ago. The spotting continued for the rest of the day. The next day and today? GUSHING. I almost just bled through my pants at work. I am using super-plus tampax & overnight always pads concurrently, and I soaked them through in 2 hours. I took an iron pill this morning & an ibuprofen to combat the huge loss of blood. I'm lightheaded & can't concentrate on my work. The Dr. said nothing of the potential symptoms after removal. I'm super pissed because I just basically lost three months of my life to something that I was told would make it better-- instead I got weight gain, leg pain, wicked mood swings, depression, constant cramps and bleeding, and a ton of money spent on pads & tampons. I hope this bleeding eases up soon.

I had Mirena put in eight weeks after my daughter was born. I was excited to not have to worry about birth control for at least five years. It hurt like crazy when it was inserted, but was over pretty quick. I bleed a little that day but nothing crazy, and it lasted for a few days. My periods slowed down after five months or so, which I was told, and they did. Everything about it so far was right on target. I felt good,no weight gain, no side effects, perfect! A year and a half later my husband and I decided to have a third baby. So I got the Mirena removed this past october I bleed. Sometimes it was bad and it lasted about two weeks or so. When I got my normal period, or so I guess it was a period, it was only two weeks after that. I was very confused. The bleeding was blasts of heaviness and then would stop. Again, i was confused. Shortly after that I found out I was pregnant. (that's why I had the iud in the first place, very fertile!) we were thrilled and started to get excited for the third! Eight weeks in, I had a miscarriage. 1 week later I had a D & E. on valentines day. From that point on to the present, I have been bleeding off and on. Mainly on. I've been to the doctor, I've made emergency calls to the doctor, and Ive had an ultrasound. I've been told everything looks and sounds normal. So I did some research. Apparently, after having the Mirena removed, you are at risk for a miscarriage. I was never told that. I was told I could go right ahead and try to get pregnant. So I've had a double whammy of the bleeding after removal, a miscarriage and a d&e. All roads leading back to the Mirena.

I have six kids and the docotor thought that mirena was my answer so at my 6 week post partum check up they put it in. I waited the 48 hours to have sex and the devil stabbed my husband, I tried to get back in to have the strings cut and it took 2 more weeks. Well by then the strings were lost somewhere inside me along with the mirena moving all the way to the top of my uterus. The doctor told me it cant go anywhere else from there and that the pain in my stomache will go away after 3 months. Well I came online saw all the horror stories and videos, said I wanted it removed, I had to threaten with an attorney to do that. They finally removed it Thursday,(37days after insertion), I was still bleeding heavy from insertion and now I'm still bleeding. It took them an hour and a half to get the darn thing out. Funny thing is they still tried to tell me that it was best for me to leave it in. Oh not to mention that in that short time of having it I have a cyst that needs to be checked in another 2 months, but ok. Women of the world don't be there test tube babies with this. I'll never ever try it again or anything like it. But how long is this heavy bleeding and blot clots going to last?

I had the Mirena removed two weeks ago after my husband and decided we wanted another baby. I started bleeding heavily within an hour of having the coil removed, within 2 days the blood was literally pouring out of me. I stopped using Tampons as they literally lasted 5 minutes before needing to be removed, maxi pads weren't sufficient and I resorted to using maternity pads. I was going through approximately 3 maternity pads an hour. I was in a meeting at work, and had gone to the loo just before, changed my tampon and pad, nipped into the meeting which was only a half hour, and when I stood up I noticed that I had bled through the tampon, pad, my trousers and on to the chair!!!! HIGHLY EMBARRASING. The following day I phoned NHS Direct as it was the weekend and was told to go to hospital immediately. I was given a tablet to stop the bleeding ( I take 2 tablets 3 times a day, I am on day two of taking the tablets and the bleeding has slowed down but not stopped. I have read the PIL over and over again and nowhere does it state what everyone is going through as a side effect. I think the mirena needs to be tested more and should not be on the market.

I had my mirena removed 4-5-12 which is 8 weeks tomorrow. I spotted the first hour after having it removed. I had it for 3 years with no period. We are ttc for baby number 3 and I want so bad to have a period to get my body back on track..but NOTHING. I called my doctor and she said it takes some time! How long?? I'm driving myself crazy.

I had the mirena in me for 3 years infebruary. I had it removed on may 10. I had already had my cycle a week prior 2 having it removed. The entire time I was on it I didn't cramp but my cycles were def off whack. They came on unexpectedly and sometimes I would have reg cycles and other times there would be just light brown spotting. I broke out in acne all over my body and face and went through extreme weight gain. Now it's time 4 me 2 have my 1st cycle again after having it removed and I feel HORRIBLE. Seems as if I'm having contractions. I have this tight pulling in the botton of my abdomen plus I'm dropping clots when I go to the restroom BUT when I wipe I'm only spotting. This is soo weird and I'm soo confused. Really thougt I wouldn't be having a period since me and my partner have been having unprotected sex. When is this pain going 2 end???? Have any 1 of u ladies experienced any of my side effects

I was advised to have the mirena inserted to slow my endometriosis growing. What a horror show, my mood swings could match the chick from misery and my appetite left anything not moving fair game. I gained 10kg in 1 year. It affected my sleep and libido? Well that was flung out the window. Mirena completely changed me, I suffered anxiety and depression so severe I questioned was I going insane?!? I've had it removed 2 days ago... and would u believe it I feel AMAZING. Girls get it taken out!!! X

Happy to have found this website as well. I had the mirena inserted February 2011 after my fourth child and taken out late May 2012. The first couple days I had light brown bleeding followed by heavy period bleeding leading into clots. I find the more active I am, the more I bleed and taking it easy does help some. I am praying the bleeding will soon come to slow down but am thankful that the mirena is out. Even though I am experiencing this, I can't help but reflect on how unhealthy inserting an IUD is for your body to cause all of this aftermath. I never knew about the "mirena crash" until I was experiencing my own. Please take into account before/during/and after before you decide if it is right for you....if I would have known what the aftermath was...I would have chosen a different bc method.

I had my mirena taken out in early march. I waited 6 more weeks, yet still no period. My doctor finally called in some progesterone for me to take. I finished it, and two weeks later and it an 11 day heavy period in may. I am now two weeks late for my period. I have no cramps, headaches or any sign of an upcoming period. I have taken several pt but keep getting negative results. My husband and I are ttc and I am worried at this rate it may not happen. Has anyone else experienced this?! Please let me know!

I bled for 6 weeks and had various tests and such. After being told I had a hormone imbalance, probably not ovulating and hyperplasia (thickend walls from excess tissue) in my uterus I was given provea but it didnt stop my bleeding. I am quite overweight so they thought this was why I had the hormone imbalance so I need to lose weight. I had a day surgery operation to have the excess uterus lining removed and a mirena inserted to control the lining growing. I was in imense pain and couldn't get out of bed for 2 months before I convinced my Dr that something was wrong. I had a high fever which tipped it for the dr and it turned out an internal infection in my uterus and bowel and was put on antibiotics... not removal of mirena. After a few months the pain settled down and I had the mirena inserted for 2.5 years with no issues other than not being able to lose weight easily which was the only way they thought the hormone imbalance would go away. So because we want to try for a child and I'm 37 now we decided to have it removed and see if my period returned to normal and perhaps I'd lose weight. I also had a AMH test which says I have 0 eggs left so need to do something maybe IVF as soon I can. Decided to see if I can get pregant naturally for next 3 months but period is going really weird and not sure anymore if its the mirenas fault. After listening to everyones story I'm not sure if I should wait 3 months for my period to return to normal or go to the dr now and take some pills to regulate it. After removal I didn't bleed for 2 weeks then it started slowly. Its now 6 weeks later and I was bleeding on and off for this whole time. I decided to take the anti bleeding pills for 3 days 2 tablets 3 times a day to see if the bleeding would stop. I started getting pains so I decided to stop those pills. Then for the last 3 days I've been bleeding really heavily and blood clots with mild cramps. Bleeding through a pad/tampon in 20 minutes is not much fun. Not sure what to do. Is it just my period returning or should I go get some provera to stop it? Not sure if I should call my dr or not. Maybe I'll leave it a day and see if it slows down. I'd always had full on periods before I had issues so blot clots are no surprise to me. But usually only for 1 day towards the end of my period. I wish I never had the mirena inserted. Why do drs recommend these evil device is what I want to know. It was great when it was working but not worth all these problems inserting and removing.

I too am glad I found this site. I have suffered with heavy, painful periods which would usually last about 7 days for years. I have tried Lupron, D&C, Nuvaring, etc. Then my GYN sugessted I get a Mirena inserted. I got the Mirena inserted on April 17, 2012. Spotted a little after the very painful insertion. Then didn't bleed for about three days. I had sex with my partner, and could feel him tugging at it while in me. Very uncomfortable. Anyway, about a day or so later, I started bleeding, which was heavier than my already heavy periods. Then, on the days when it would start off heavy, it would turn into a nasty brown discharge, with a smell. This went on for three weeks. I am just happy that both me and my partner are very busy professionals, so a three week breather is normal for us. Anyway, one Saturday I was bleeding, and the next day nothing. So we had sex. Well, while I love having sex with my partner, neither of us enjoyed the foul old blood smell that was coming from me. I was so embarrased and angry. All of my problems of nasty, bleeding started with the Mirena. I made numerous calls to my GYN, only to be told to give it 3 months. I was so frustrated. I am an RN, so it was quite embarrasing to bleed through pads, super plus tampons on my white or navy blue scubs. Finally, on June 12, 2012 I had the Mirena removed. I have been still bleeding huge clots, soaking overnight pads, and am in pain from the cramps. I have not been able to have sex in 5 weeks because of the constant bleeding. Now I am on high dose birth control pills every eight hours to help control the bleeding. I am also taking an iron supplement. I feel very weak, nauseated, and will be glad when this nightmare ends!

I had my iud put in in oct 2011 after our second baby. At first I never thought nothin of it. I had started losing weight after the baby but it is at a stand still now. I had it removed last Friday the 15. And I feel better except for the heavy bleeding. I'm hoping it ends soon. How long should I expect this to go on??? It is summer and I'd like to be able to swim with my kids.

It is so nice to know that i am not alone! so many of the side effects and symptoms I am reading about from other women explain so much of what I have been feeling for the past year. I just had my second Mirena removed after a year. It was just as horrible as the first time, though I felt like I had no other reasonable option while breastfeeding so I decided to give it another go. Constant spotting, painful sex, bleeding during and after sex, watery discharge, weird smell, itching, bloating and the list goes on. I am now experiencing the heavy bleeding that so many other women have posted about but hopefully it wont last long. Thank you all so much for being open about these problems as I know some of them can be embarrassing. Good luck to you all!!!

I am 39 years...after 3 years of having the mirena in, I decided to have it removed because I had started getting a yucky discharge off and on and would last for a week or so (I also noticed that my moods were becoming a bit up and down...) Since having it out my moods have definitely balanced out...but I have been bleeding heavily now for 3 weeks, with no signs of letting up. I am having gushes and clotting also...I had always suffered from heavy period, period pains and clotting but I can honestly say I have never bleed this heavy for this period of time before. So I am off to the doc's in a couple of days to find out whats going on... PS This is my second mirena....for me personally I have to say that the Mirena has been the best form of contraception that I have ever used..no periods, no pains, iron levels stabilised, no PMT , Easy etc...when I first get it put in I experience nausea, headaches, bloating and a bit of cramping but this settles down in about a month and then it really good from then on... Just unfortunate that this is happening now (my plan was to have this one removed and with next period get another inserted)...dispite this situation I still think I will as I do find the Mirena to be suitable otherwise.

I have had the most horrible experience with my IUD. I had it put in 7 weeks after my son was born in 05. I had the bleeding off and on for six months and never had another period for the entire 7 years I had it. The cramps were horrible. I am not sure if anyone else had this issue but 2 years in I started smelling bad. Pregnancy symptoms. Horrible mood swings. If I strained myself with either working out, or walking I would spot for days. Pain during intercourse. Bleeding after intercourse. Weight gain and not able to loose it no matter what I tried. And the last 6 months I thought I was pregnant because I kept feeling a baby kick.

I had it 7 years because when I went at 3 years to have it taken out due to extreme cramps they told me that they could not remove it and that they now could last 7 years. I had bleeding for about 3 days after removal but nothing to major. And I have lost 20 pounds in a month! But as of three days ago I have been stuck in bed and literally gushing blood. I am dizzy, nauseas, lethargic, can not eat, and in so much pain I just want to cry. The blood clots.... so scary. They could be used for a horror film. At this point I am not even sure what to do. I do not want to go to the ER if it is just my period making up for lost time but I also do not want to lie here and bleed to death. I am going to give it a few more days but I am pretty sure I will be heading up the the ER soon.

I am not sure why this thing is even on the market. I know two other woman that have had teh same issues. The only explination I can come up with is that Minerva pays these Drs to use their product. After hearing all of these horror stories and knowing now I could possibly have no more children I am pretty upset.

Please, Please, Please if you experience any of the severe symptoms above ask your GP or Doctor to report this an an ADR to Bayer and/or the MHRA (in the UK) they will only look into printing these effects on their leaflet if there are enough complaints deemed to do so. Might not help us but could help those in the future.

I am so shocked to have read all your comments! I have had the mirena in for 3.5 years and aside from slight cramping and light bleeding after initial insertion i have been in complete bliss with no periods, cramping or discomfort since (returned to a healthy cycle post removal within 2 mths)! i understand that every woman requires a forum in which to voice her concerns and share important experiences. however, as a women and registered nurse i compel women to complete a thorough review of current research (go to your local library and ask them to help you with a search of current journals), a balanced forum such as this one and find a doctor you are very happy with - you'll know within the first 5 minutes if you feel comfortable with your general / specialised practitioner! just remember - we are all individuals and therefore react to drugs, implants and procedures individually.

My doctor suggested mirena as a solution to a constantly twelve month bleeding. All the other blood results were perfect and we used it as the method that would stop the problem! It is now six monthw of constantly bleeding and only 3 days per month thw bleeding stops to start all over again after these 3 days. After my today call to the doctor he said that we should remove it. Now I am the one that afraids of bleeding because of mirena removal.Does it normally takes so long for the body to adjust thw new conditions? I am confused...

HERE IS MY STORY HERE:
http://militarywifememoirs.blogspot.nl/2012/07/my-mirena-meltdown.html?spref=fb

I just got my mirena removed today in the morning.

I had mirena for almost 5 months, and it was the most wretched months I could imagine. My side-effects were:

WEIGHT GAIN/BLOATING (UGH)
CRAZY EMOTIONS
BAD TWISTING/CRAMPING PAIN
BREAST TENDERNESS
FATIGUE
ACNE
HEADACHES
THINKING I WAS PREGNANT

My insertion was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life; but I've never had children, and I know that it is not recommended to those without children, although my doctor did not seem to think so. From there I was in agony for about a week. I cried, and bled and couldn't even have a bowel movement without being in excruciating pain.

Once that pain had subsided, I decided to give it time. I continued having pinching pain that would cause me to double over . Still I gave it time.

The other symptoms continued. I was turning into a bloated, fat, emotional mess. Worse, I developed what was like a CONSTANT infection that left tons of discharge daily and had a less-than-desirable smell. I was feeling completely out of sync with my body and decided I wanted to take it out after reading the stories of others. Not to mention my hubby and I wanted a baby so we were scared that my uterus was or could be punctured.

Today, at 0930 in the morning I got it removed. I felt a mild pinch, and it was out! The doctor even showed me it! Then he explained that my mirena wasn't in place. It was too low in my uterus.

** It was causing my uterus irritation which was giving me the constant infection and pain. Needless to say, I was thankful to get it out.**

Oddly though, I haven't had any cramping or bleeding yet, at all - I'm not sure if that's an issue or not, but I haven't heard of anyone not cramping or bleeding.

I URGE YOU ALL TO READ ALL THE STORIES AND LOOK THROUGH ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS! DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR A MILLION QUESTIONS IF THAT'S WHAT'S NEEDED!

Courtney said...

PLEASE, READ MY STORY AT THE GIVEN LINK ON MY BLOG!!

I list side-effects that can occur, as well as my story and removal story. I understand what it's like to search high and low on the internet for answers.

Your answer is... listen to your body! If it feels off, it probably is!

Update on my post June 18. Its now mid July and its been 3 months since removal and still my period isn't normal. After ending up having to have Provera for 10 days to stop the bleeding and reset me I now seem to be having a 2 week cycle. Hopefully it will return to normal soon as we are trying for a baby. I rue the day I ever was talked into inserting this awful device. I'm almost 38, have no eggs left and I don't have lots of time left to have a child and this device has delayed me further waiting to get a normal period back. Some have said up to a year before it was normal again. Wish I'd found this site before I had it inserted. I never would have got it.

I had Mirena placed December 02, 2011. I had pretty severe periods before I started birth control and they lightened with Birth control pills but I wasn't good at keeping track of taking them. I got Mirena placed and bled lightly for 3 months straight. the doctor said it was normal so i ignored it. After the bleeding stopped i retained a normal period every month until July of 2012. It lasted one day was extremely light and no pain. I was relieved that they finally were stopping. Three days later I started bleeding heavily and having cramping pains, which I had never gotten with the IUD. I was bleeding for well over a week so I called my OBGYN. she couldn't see me but her assistant could. I went to go see her and she tried to remove the IUD but the strings had migrated. she recommended I go get and ultrasound to make sure it was in place. After the ultrasound I made an appointment to see my regular OBGYN. I was still bleeding mind you and my health was slowly deteriorating. I was cramping, and now my back was in horrible pain. I was bedridden. That friday I finally went to the ER. They did nothing for me but give me pain meds till I could see my OBGYN. Finally I got to see her and she had to inject my Cervix 6 times with Litocane to get the IUD out (because I had never had a child). It was horrible but we got it out with no problems. Its 2 days since then and Im having huge blood clots and heavy bleeding like before I had even started BC. Since im not on any BC yet until Sunday (I start the pill again) im not sure if I should call again. Im bleeding so much but feeling better as well (no more pain just normal period cramping) I dont know if I should be worried or not about the bleeding.

Can't believe I found this site! I had a Mirena put in in march that thing is out of me as of yesterday! Since having it inserted my emotional well being took a a tail spin I was diagnosed with SEVERE depression, threatened to leave my poor husband who couldn't believe the whack job that I turned in to, developed a golf ball sized ovarian cyst on my right ovary, I have diarrhea almost every day my boobs and belly felt huge I gain a whopping 35 lbs because I couldn't stop eating, now dealing with the reprecussions. I'm constantly tired but my mood is way better and a day after having it removed I feel a lot better! Lite bleeding and some diarrhea and ovary pain but at least it's out of me!

I am so glad to have found this! I notice that my post is a year or so after the last one but i'd really like some help and advice!!

I am 17 and i have an 18 month old daughter, i had the mirena inserted 27/07/2012. It was painful, yes, but it was okay because i had a horrible labor. I had very very light spotting the day of the insertion. it went away that night. Next morning, it was back. The next day, gone again. THEN, i started bleeding insanely heavy compared to my normal period. My mirena was inserted on the Friday, the sunday i was rushed to emergency by my partner because i couldn't stand up because of the pain. I honestly thought i was in labor, no, it was worse! i could time the "contractions" and i was in agonizing pain!! they sent me away saying it was nothing unusual. two weeks later, i am still bleeding through 4-5 tampons and pads a day. NOT NORMAL FOR ME!!! I feel pretty grotty, i have had random break downs, extremely bad leg cramps, mood swings and my acne is getting bad again :(. Before i got it, i was told i would not get period, moodswings or any pain. BS! I allready hate it and hearing that some woman bled for the first six months straight, i am not keen!
I can smell the blood, which i hate because im an extremely hygienic person so this is a horrible experience for me. Even my husband mentioned it and even he can smell it! no matter how many showers, how many tampons or how regularly i change my pads. Its a horrible smell and the bleeding is mixed with some clear fluidy type of substance. Has anybody had this experience and is there any advice? I feel like a different person, i have struggled with extreme depression a few years ago, and certainly don't want this again.
Please help if you can..

(never happened w the other 2) Not a happy camper. GYN says the bleeding could last up to 6mo. I hate this after not having a period for 10 years! I'm giving it 5 more days then calling back!

I had a friend who did nothing but gain weight with the mirena iud. She never lost weight. Until it eas removed. Me on the other hamd have been able to loose 20lbs since i had it put in 5 years ago. You have to work extra hard at it. Definitely keep in contact with your doctor about beeding. Some people just cant have it in their bodies. Im sorry your having this experience and i hope it gets better

I had my mirena removed for 5 days and get bleeding, but almost normal. I feel happy as I am back to normal me. My methabolism is back to normal, my mood back to normal, I don't feel like I was replaced by a depressed crazy person and feel that my weight will be back to normal. Hope my cyst will go away after 1-2 months. I cannot imagine to get another one in never again. I had mirena for 2 yrs and just curious how stupid I was. Before putting mirena in, you must test your hormone levels and do the blood tests and after then your doctor can decide is mirena for you or not. Mirena is for thouse who have one child at least, who have some hormone disbalance and some other indications. Yes, mirena has some positive effects but so many side effects, so first ask yourself was it worth putting it in and feeling ill or creazy until the removal.

This is awful we go get mirena to help but it does things to us we wish would of been better off with out it I took it out after 3 1/2 weeks because of chest pains always feeling tired, headaches and sometimes a twisting pain in my right side I decided this is going to harm me so its coming out my doctor first time I told her tried her best to talk me out of it but I knew it's a bad idea having something inside of me that is causing so many problems so I told my doctor take it out and she did she felt bad I was going thru this but I am happy it's out I got my period day after removal hopefully normal but I'm just suggesting don't allow a doctor to tell you what you should do if it's affecting you do whats right get it out hope you the best

I had mirena inserted on july 25th,2012 bled few days then no period on my expected date well I notice headaches, chest pains, tiredness,my blood pressure would go up and somedays a pain like twisting feeling on my right lower side same as horrible pain when they inserted well I couldn't take it anymore and ask doctor to remove it she tried to convince me but I told her it's harming me more then helping so she took it out I got my period immediately after and i'm happy its out this was a bad idea to even have it put in I would recommend that we women find a better method of controlling pain, heavy periods, and pregnancy then having this mirena put inside of you and having to experience side effects shame on FDA and Bayer Company I guess Money is more important then the life of a woman

I'm glad I'm getting some advice on how to deal with the heavy bleeding and golf sized clots which even pushed out my Nuvaring. I got this put in June 2 months later the strings fell came out so I had to take it out due to discomfort. I was already spotting when it came out but 8/21/11 which was the next day after it coming out I've been bleeding like crazy and the clots are outta control. I can't take myself to the emergency room now because I have a 9 month old and I'm light headed I think I'm going into shock everytime I go to the bathroom from all the blood pouring out. I'm anemic already so I feel like I'm close to fainting. This is the worst!

Hi everyone.

Really happy to have found this web page. I'm 21 and since I was 14 I've been suffering with very heavy and extremely painful periods. For a while I tried the pill which for 5 years calmed the bleeding but the pain was still quite intense resulting in me passing out occasionally and throwing up uncontrollably. I'd decided that I had enough and underwent a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy procedure where they diagnosed me with dysfunctional uterine bleeding. In the same procedure they fitted the mirena but previous to this DID NOT explain the possible side effects. For 3 weeks I had spotting that didn't bother me much but the pain was something else! my painkillers did nothing to calm the severe cramping pains I was getting and I was constantly sweating and crying as the pain went on for hours!!!! ( I felt so sorry for my boyfriend, he didn't know what to do) the hospital told me to wait it out as it was normal to suffer with cramps after the fitting. 3 weeks later I had the thing removed, the pain just got too much for me! It effected my work life, studying and also upset my boyfriend to see me in so much pain.

I'm not going to say do not get the mirena as everyones bodies are different and what may have not worked for me may work for others but it is IMPORTANT you listen to your bodies ladies.. If you feel that you are suffering GET IT REMOVED! Just be aware, as previously mentioned, there is some heavy bleeding afterwards.... personally I'm just so happy it's gone and although I am getting some bleeding, the pains have vanished and I will now try and find a different contraceptive that won't cause so much hassle!!! Good Luck ladies :-) X

WOW! I cannot believe what I have been reading. I am sorry to everyone and their experience so far.

I have had the Mirena for about a year now. & it has been amazing for me. Not that painful to insert, mild cramping, mild spotting for a week or so.

Then nothing but extremely light periods since Nov. until now. Always on time, minimal PMS, or cramping even. A few pantyliners for a few days & I am good to go.

Never had any pain during or after intercourse even. But what brings me to this site is that I just this week have had some minor spotting? Is it my turn to suffer? Why would it be perfect until now? I just finished my period two weeks ago. Anyone know why this could be happening now?

I have had my period now for a week...I went into the bathroom and a HUGE bloodclot came out...HUGE...like the size of a large mans hand. The Mirena was in there as well. I'm relieved to say the least. I've had the IUD for 1.5 years and had a perma-yeast infection/baterial infection since about a month after insertion. I'm 39 and have not been able to lose weight since having this thing in me. My body rejected it and now I'm happy it's out. I only hope the bleeding stops!

I got mine removed 2 days ago, before i got it removed i was feeling weak out of breath, and cramping really bad. I got it removed because i thought it would help with that. I have had my IUD in for 3 years. I had cramping every now and then not no spotting, no bleeding just cramps every month. Ever since i got it removed I am still cramping and feel week. I do not know what to think of this. I read that sperm can stay in you for at least 5 day, and that if you are going to get it removed, dont have sex a week before you get it removed because the sperm can still be in you. Could the reason that i have not started to bleed yet because i could be pregnant? I do have one kid so i know what it is like to have a baby but when i pregnant with him, i have no cramps, no pain, and no morning sickness, i would of never known i was pregnant with with him. I am just worried. I have been reading what everyone was saying about heavy bleeding, blood clots, and all that i don't have none of that. I am just cramping after getting mine removed 2 days ago.

I have now had the notes out for 1q0 months, it worked Well, got to where I was having no periods which freaked me out so I had it removed. Well now I have a period if lucky every 6-7 weeks. I've been wanting baby number 3 but no matter what I do my periods will not regulate. I'm scared the notes made me infertile or messed me up so bad I can't have kids. Me and my partner of 7 yrs never had an issue conceiving, conceived first month we tried with both n now this. Dr. Has no explanation other than take the pill. Idk what to do......

I had the Mirena Implant since July 12,2011. I have NOT had the luxury of not having a period every month. i was told by my Gyn that the IUD would help relive my heavy periods. I went from my period lasting 5-7 days a month to sometimes lasting 15 days. the month after I had the IUD put in my period lasted 23 days! I was quite concerned. My Gyn said there was nothing to worry about. It has been over a yr since the placement, and my period has not gone away as I had hoped. I have not had any children. But have miscarried before. I wonder if that is the reason for my cycle to still be a monthly occurrence. After reading the stories on this page, I am a little afraid to have it removed!

Hello, all,
And sympathy to those who have struggled with Mirena. I am quite a bit older (44) than most of you and thought I would share some information and reminders that may be helpful.

Many of these posts could really scare a person unnecessarily, and I would urge everyone to read the researched medical information posted about Mirena with statistics rather than limit information to personal stories where there could be many factors at play. That being stated, honor your bodies and your own intuition -- each one of us is different and will react differently to various medications and hormones. Years ago I had a hard time on regular birth control pills and had to stop taking them, but now I find that progesterone helps improve my symptoms, which is why I chose Mirena.

Keep in mind that as one ages into 30s and 40s, your periods, PMS symptoms and weight gain will often change. When I was in my 20s and early 30s I had the easiest periods and never had any weight gain issues. In my 30s my hormones shifted and I had acne issues. Now in my 40s, my skin is clear yet I struggle with taking weight off more and my periods have become unbearable these last two years. As many of you know, most women put on and keep a little extra weight after each child. This is just part of the life cycle! :). My periods were extremely heavy and long (7-10 days every month) with clots (don't worry about heavy bleeding too much after having the device removed or during the first couple months; it is likely your body adjusting to hormone shifts....something you'll probably have to deal with in 40s and 50s again) and cycles had decreased to 23 days/unpredictable and I had terrible mood swings and PMS symptoms. So for me, Mirena has been a blessing compared to what was "normal" in my cycle these past two years. I spoke with 3 docs, two of them who use Mirena themselves, before deciding to try.

After having it placed, I did have some cramps, but nothing more than normal and the doctor clearly explained that the lining has to slowly slough off for a few months until it stabilizes. This is why many of you are having heavy or constant spotting/bleeding. My doc told me to buy a box of panty liners and be prepared. I'm hoping your docs are being as honest with you as mine has been.

The brochure states that it is fine to use tampons with Mirena if you need to during this time that can last up to 6 months. My doc shared that most women experience up to 3 months of the most unpredictable bleeding and then it tends to improve, but these are averages.

Weight gain/retention could also be caused by many other factors. We all have to modify our caloric intake and exercise routines as we age. I have read that some actually lose weight when they use progesterone in later years; it's typically the decrease of estrogen that causes weight gain in older women rather than a change in progesterone.

Most importantly, don't let yourself stay scared....if in doubt or with any questions, call your doctor rather than turning to blogs!

Thank you so much for starting this site :) I had mirena fitted in feb 2011 to help with heavy painful periods, I had just lost 2 stone 4lbs with slimming world, since having the mirena fitted I have gained over 2 & half stone!!!!! Had a severe bout of depression :( thought I was going crazy !!! I have been back to clinic twice to get it removed but was talked into keeping it. Finally 4 weeks ago I went into hospital for a TVT (bladder op) and I asked the consultant to remove my coil while doing my op.
I was fine for the a few weeks (other than recovering from the op) but since Sunday I have bled heavily, with huge clots coming away and I feel a gush every time I move. I was told not to use tampax for 6 weeks after my op so I am having to use pads only and changing at least every hour sometimes more. I know it's only been 5 days but reading these I am expecting this to go on longer! Does anyone know exactly how long I should expect this to continue and does it settle down again after a few month? I must admit I do feel happier that the coil is now out but I am not looking forward to going back to the heavy painful periods :(

Hi ladies,
I am 42 years old with two children. I had the Mirena inserted the 13th of September, yes a little over a month ago. I had it inserted while on my period and stopped bleeding for oh I would say 2 days. From there I was constantly spotting up until I started my period again on the 4th of Oct and am still bleeding!! *I am on a 21 day cycle 3 wks 3 dys to be exact which sux big time anyway. And yes I count the full week that I am on my cycle so I bleed 2 weeks of a 4 week month!*

The OB/GYN who installed it told me to give it three months then to come back and see him. I originally choose this method because I have tried everything else and nothing worked. I forgot to take the pill, the Depro shot I bleed straight for 12 months .... I have heavy periods that stop me from going to school and work for atleast 2 days out of each month. I can literally sit on the toilet during that time. So my family doc suggested this to me. I know many people who are on the Mirena and it works great for them, so I thought why not give it a shot. Here I am in the same boat as before I guess not as bad but in all seriousness. I am keeping the pad manufacturers in business with my purchases!! I am hopin that after my 3 months have come and gone I will be more regulated but now I fear for the end when I do decide to have it removed.

Again I am older, have my family raised and am in early menopause I requested to have it all taken out as I'm not going to use it any more but my doctor was against it. IT'S MY BODY, don't I have the right to do with it what I want?? Any feedback appreciated also I would like to see some positive posts if there are any.

I am 33 yrs and a mother of two. I had my tubes tied after my last child, but I continued to have terrible periods. Lots of bleeding, clots, cramping & crying on my 2/3 days from the pain. My doctor suggested I give the Mirena a try. Since I have an enlarged uterus and an ablation (burning of the uterus) might not stop the bleeding. She said we should try to regulate my hormones using an IUD.
I had the Mirena put in at the end of June while on my period. My doctor said it would make the insertion easier. It didn't hurt a bit during insertion. About 5 days after insertion my period stopped. Then the next month when it was time for my period I had a heavy period just like before insertion. Acne, Terrible Mood Swings, Hair Loss & Weight Gain. I wanted to give the Mirena time to adjust. I went in for my 6wks check up and she told me that this was normal and my period would eventually lighten & disappear. So I kept it, now I am on my 14wk of this period...and it has only gotten worse. The cramping is unbearable some days I have to take meds left over from my C-section to cope with the pain. The bleeding is as many of the ladies have mentioned HEAVY, HEAVY...waking up in puddles, bleeding through tampons, pads & my pants at work. I finally had enough and called my old OBGyn and his is removing the Mirena and suggesting I get an ablation in hopes this will help stop the bleeding at least for a while. I can't wait to get this FOREIGN thing out of my body.
I hope all you ladies get the right care and NEVER let your doctor tell you that you can't take out the Mirena. It is not their choice. If they continue to refuse, find someone else who will do it. Your Body is YOUR BODY!!

I have had a Mirena or 5 years now and have had no problems until now. 2 weeks ago I started spotting for 2 days and stopped. 2 days ago I started bleeding so heavy I'm soaking super tampons and have messed up 2 pair of pants! No cramping or pain just lots of blood! I'm wondering how long should I wait before I call my physician?

I had got a mirena 18months ago to help combat heavy periods. I experienced spotting and the occational heavy period for the first year as well as very painfull cramping post sexual activity. The cramping was so severe I avoided intimacy with my husband (not good after 32 happy years)Thankfully I have a understanding man. I have had some weight gain 10 lbs and my moods sometimes are overwhelming,Sex can be very painfull and definatly certain positions are no longer an option, lots of unexplained tears.now after 18 months I am experiencing very heavy periods again and heavy clotting.I must also add that I have a foul odor to menzies makes me wonder if there could be an infection.appointment with Gyn in two weeks so will see what happens.

I have had the mirena in since November and in the begaining I had some spotting here and there but for the past two or three months it seems I've been bleeding the whole time. I'm bleeding so heavy that it looks as if I just had a baby and starting my six weeks after labor. I offten get sharp pains in my abdimen and back, dizzy, and noticed some clotting. I don't know what to do and need advice. Please what should I do and what could this be a sign of??

I was wondering if anyone knows whether to count the bleeding that tends to occur after removal as an actual period?
My husband and I made the choice to try for baby #2 and I had the mirena removed on Oct.24

I had a period prior on Oct 10th
.. which is leading me to believe that I was or could have been ovulation while bleeding from the 25th.

Now my confusion begins. Where do I base my ovulation for Nov?!

We tried a few times in Nov and I haven't had a period since the Oct removal! I've been testing ovulation and pregnancy - NEG for both!!!
SO, what do you think?! should I be getting my hopes up!?!

I am so pleased to have found this site. At the age of 50 and four and half years of a Merina IUD that gave no problems and supported by HRT regime, 6 weeks ago I had a pelvic infection. After a frank discussion with my GP she took my coil out Tuesday morning…Oh my goodness!
Tuesday I felt great, a skip in my step…last night bled quite heavily, today I am changing tampons and sanitary pads every hour. No major discomfort or pain and other than rather flabbergasted I feel fine. I am waiting for the GP to call me back, however, having read this Blog I think all this is sadly ‘normal’.
I only wish the GP had warned me. Forewarned is forearmed, I could have at least made provison with ample supply of sanitary products here in my office, or decided to wait until after the holiday period…hey ho.

I have had the mirena iud for ten years and have loved being period free for the whole time. Now I have started spotting quite frequently and was starting to get scared..started to do some research and came across this blog. I thought I had had no problems, but having read through all the comments, I am beginning to question whether my onset of health issues..malise,fatigue swollen joints which despite numerous tests have not been diagnosed, are in fact a side effect of mirena. I would love to take it out to see if my symptoms change, but the worry of perpetual bleeding after makes me concerned. Which is the lesser evil.

Hi Everyone.
I had my Mirena inserted December 13th, 2012. I got my first period after insertion December 23rd. I am still bleeding only it is getting worse. Bleeding is becoming heavier and heavier. It is bright red and almost dripping right out. Sorry if this is too much information I go maybe 3 hours and soak through a tampon and pad :( this cannot be normal can it? If so I want it OUT. Any advice/help? I'm also starting to get cramps too. Strings feel longer. Thanks. Liz

I am very grateful for this blog. I have not been able to find much on Mirena post-removal. I had Mirena for 2.5 years and felt very uncomfortable with it the whole time (bloating, water retention, spotting, acne). I had it removed 6 months ago and am now experiencing extremely heavy periods twice per month now. These are the most painful periods I have ever had in my life. My body is completely out of whack and I don't know how to get it back to normal.

I had my IUD removed on Dec 20th (about 3 weeks ago). I had it for 2 years and other then the first few months of spotting I had zero issues. I got it removed so we could have another baby. A day after removal I started spotting and bled light to medium for about a week. Then every few days I would get a gush of either really dark red or light pink blood and that would be it. I've been crampy off n on for the last 3 weeks and that first week I was a nightmare. I was so grouchy and moody that even I didn't want to be around myself. That has since gone away, but now I am noticing after sex I spot for a few hours and I get crampy off n on. Is this normal? I want to call my DR, but they are closed for the weekend...

I am going through the same thing. I had the Mirena moved at the end of October. I didn't get my period for a month and a half. I actually got my hopes up that I might be pregnant. I finally started my period in early December. However, it has been anything but normal. I AM STILL BLEEDING. It's already mid January and some days are light, others are moderate. It's been unbearable for my husband and I. I want my cyles to normalize so we can begin trying. I call the oc and he says it's the hormones fading and if I'm not gushing or bleeding heavily, I should be patient... How long is patient?

It has been 3 yrs since I've had the Mirena removed. I still have stabbing side pain when my period comes. My periods still are very very very heavy, last about 8 days and I have a period 2x a months sometimes. Dr. says things just change when you get older and that's why I'm having such bad side pains. I don't buy it. In 2010 I got pregnant and the whole time I was carrying I never experienced the side pain until after I gave delivery and my periods started again. in 2010 when I went to have the mirena removed they couldn't find it so did ultra sound and still couldn't find it so they said it must of fell out. 2 wks later I was pregnant. Now I was having the mirena removed because of the pain & I also decided to have another child. Totally forgot about the side pain for the 9 months of pregnancy and since I breastfed I didn't start my periods again for almost a yr now here I am experiencing the pain again every month sharp stabbing pain can barely move and having to change my pad every 30 min for 3 out of the 8 days I bleed.

I had the mirena inserted after my second child, and experienced terrible stomach cramps, backaches, chest pain spotting for 3 to 4 weeks at a time and the list goes on. So I had it removed December 3, 2012. I started my period on the 6th of December and it lasted until December 10th. It is now January 21st and I haven't had my period. My husband and I have been using potection because we don't want anymore kids, and I'm just confused because I have been having terrible abdominal pain for the last 3 weeks but no other sign that its coming. Is anyone else experiencing this? Because I'm nervous and scared because I really don't want to be prego and these pains are terrible and I don't remeber having terrible stomach pains with my two kids. Any answers would be appreciated.

I had my Mirena IUD put in about 4 1/2 years ago. There was minimal cramping after it was put in that day. I didn't experience any problems and had a few days of very light bleeding each month. I had it removed this past December and bled for over two weeks. I started my second period after removal and am bleeding quite a bit. These last two periods are nothing like I have ever had my whole life - very heavy, red and clots. Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiences. I will wait 6 months and see how it goes.

Wow...I had my Mirena removed on 2/1/2013 and I have had the heavey bleeding and clots too! I had it once for 5 years with out a period. Then I had it put back in July 2012. It was causing to many issues just as some of you had mention so I had it removed. This is so not good. Have any of you seen the number on TV stating call if you have the Mirena and it has caused you problems? I had a stroke in 2007 4 months after I had my first Mirena placed. The doctors could never find reason that I had a stroke. Every time I would say could it be the Mirena they would tell me "NO". Then I see this TV commercial (a couple of weeks ago) stating if you have or had the Mirena and have had -a list of things were listed- one of them being a stroke. I was in shock! That's when I called to get this out of me. I will located the number and call them...but for now I just want to stop this bleeding=(

I know how you feel. I had mine inserted in 2008. At first it was OK but then I noticed weight gain and I couldn't lose it. I had very lite periods if any at all. However ovulation felt like I was gonna die. The cramping and pain was unbearable. I also changed moods very often and had the same sleep issues. I got that damn thing out 3 days ago and just started heavy bleeding today. If I knew of all this crap before hand I definitely wouldn't have got one.

I had the Mirena inserted in June 2012 and had almost constant spotting, which would get worse after sex. I would be lucky to get a few days a month when I wasn't bleeding. After 8 months, I'd had enough and had it removed on Feb 4th, 2013. I started what I thought was a period the next day, and it has not stopped.

For the first week, it felt like a regular period, maybe a little on the light side. It seemed to be stopping, but I was still bleeding every time I would urinate and would sometimes pass large blood clots when I would urinate. I'll bleed for a few days, and just when I think that it's going to stop, I start again. The blood is really dark, almost black. I'm so over this. I just hope that my cycles go back to normal soon.

WOW!!! My reaction to Mirena IUD. I had it inserted MAY 2010. I had maybe 3 periods each year but in the 2nd year (may 2012) I started to feel cramps and discomfort and pelvic pain. So I told my doctor to remove it. HE said their was nothing wrong with it and encouraged me to keep it. Well after increased pain and discomfort after intercourse I decided (8 months later Jan 22,2013) to remove it with Doctors approval or not. THAT same day I was diagnosed with an OVARIAN CYST. I had a light period for 4 days and a week later I get another period. Now I have had one on and off for these last 6 weeks. VERY UPSET and my Doctor wants to remove Cyst Surgically because Birth Control Treatment he gave me didn't work. I had very bad hair loss, fatigue, weight gained and mood swings ever since it was inserted. Now I'm just all depressed and upset for not having it removed the first time I felt the discomfort. Just waiting to see if this Natural remedy I am taking now will help me before I have surgery.

I was 18 when I got my first mirena. My side effects included:
~Hair loss
~weight gain (22lbs)
~abnormal discharge- sometimes white and clumpy other times yellowish green
~cystic acne on face and upper back
~ tired all the time, no energy
~anxiety, and depression
~severe mood swings
~sharp stabbing pain
~ random chest pain
~leg pain/numbness
~abnormal bowel movements

I never had these symptoms before starting the mirena. I never had back acne in my teen years until starting the mirena. I endured the side effects for 5 years because as a birth control it was doing it's job in preventing pregnancy and I also didn't get my period.
July 2012 I had my old one removed and asked about alternative forms of BC. I was talked into getting another mirena and decided it was the only way to not have a period or a baby. With the new one all of the symptoms listed above were worse than they had been on the first one. The abdominal pain was so bad I couldn't even have a bowel movement. After not being able to pass stool for a week because it was painful I went to the doctor and was told I was just constipated and to drink more water. Constipation does not feel like sharp stabbing pains only on the left side of my abdomen. A few days later the sharp stabbing pain subsided but I was still constipated. On March 8th, 2013 I decided to get the mirena removed. I told my gyn all of my symptoms and she said I should get my throid checked out because that causes hair loss. She tried talking me out of getting it removed, but I sternly told her I didn't want it anymore and that it will get removed during this visit. She removed it, which only felt like a moderate pinch. The instant I got up I felt relief. I decided not to do any form of BC just to rid my body of the chemicals and make sure the symptoms weren't due to a thyroid problem. I bled two days after removal but didn't know if it was an actual period or just from removal process. All of the side effect symptoms have stopped and my hair is now growing back. It looks like I have baby hairs on my head now because of the substantial hair loss. While on mirena my hair was coming out in clumps, and now only a month after removal my hair does not come out in clumps in fact there are only one or two strands that come out when I brush my hair now. I feel more energized and sleep is of better quality.Lost 5 lbs the week after removal and kept the same eating habits.
Thyroid problem disproved!
The only thing that is concerning me now is that I just got a real period and it looks like pure blood just like if someone had cut themselves. Going through super tampon and pad every hour, which has never happened to me before. Hopefully it subsides and my other periods will be normal as my body keeps detoxing.

I had Mirena placed January 2011. My side effects:
-Constant back pain and sciatica
-Weight gain of 30 pounds
-Fatigue and depression
-Light but totally unpredictable periods
-Strings never "softened" and my husband ALWAYS felt them

Despite what Bayer's shiny marketing brochures say, this was definitely not a good choice for me.

I took out my Mirena myself during a particularly painful period January 2013 and in one month I lost 10 pounds. I had a normal period in 3 weeks after removal and I have felt great since! No more back pain and I am back to being a morning person.

Was definitely not the contraceptive for me.

I had mirena implanted in 2009 a year after having my son. I was underweight, very active, worked out in the gym and starting to bulk up (muscle definition). It is now 2013 and I have been having shoulder pain since 2009. I did not put two and two together that I was caused by the mirena. I've had numerous X-rays, cat scan, MRI, massage therapy, chiropractor adjustments, juicing cleanses, bought special pillow for shoulder pain, had drs just wanting to prescribe my sleep meds and pain meds and I wouldn't take any of it! I wanted to find the root of the problem and I'm so glad that I did. I started having trouble sleeping, random rashes and itching so bad I couldn't sleep. I went in to see a different dr for the itching, sores on my legs that wouldn't heal after 3 months along with my fingers and toes turning blue when the least bit cold or if rested for a long time. The dr did genetic testing on me and found out that I had drug induced lupus. Hearing this was a complete shock to me since I had turned down medications from every dr so far and for the most part eating all natural food, no processed crap etc. I had no clue what it was from. The I realized after cramping really bad from the mirena that I was medicine that I had be on since around the time my shoulder pain started. So a week later I had the mirena removed. I had to argue with my Ob and basically tell him if he didnt remove it I would go to someone else that would. But I am SO GLAD that I did get it removed. 3 days after removing it I woke up with no severe shoulder pain!!!! I slept great and for the first time in YEARS I woke up feeling rested! I am bleeding a bit now (it's been a week) but this cramping and bleeding is nothing compared to the shoulder pain and feeling tired, confused, depressed, leg sores, rashes, itching on legs do bad I couldn't sleep, loosing my hair, gaining weight I am not over weight, lost all of my muscle, I have a baby pouch which I didn't have before. I had my son premature so I only gained 21 lbs when pregnant and lost it very easily. I've had constant acne to the point of scaring since having the mirena. It's only been a week but I already feel like Im getting my life back. If you have any of these issues GET THE MIRENA REMOVED! The symptoms and issues are only going to get worse!

I had my Mirena put in Feb 2009 and it was honestly the best decision I ever made. I had the usual heavy bleeding for about 3 months but after I've had no issues, including no period! And it's stayed away for 4.5 years! My 5 years are up in Feb 2013 and I have noticed some spotting recently. I was wondering if that was normal and if it's my period coming back :(. I will not have another one place because I will be trying for another child. I do feel lucky that I didn't have an issue with it considering the horror stories I have heard :/.
I did experience some weight gain, but that is normal with any contraceptive. If I didn't stay active and ate like a fatty then of course I would gain weight. But I was able to keep it under control with exercise and eating right. Good luck to anyone who decides to try it. For me it was great, but like I said EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Don't base your decision on other peoples experiences, because they are all different.

Similar story to most - only mine's alot shorter! Decided to go for the Mirena as the doctor suggested it to slow down my periods etc., as I'm at that kind of age (50), so - without reading about it - I agreed and had it put in. Wasn't too uncomfortable - had the old copper type coils fitted before - so was easy in comparison to those. A day later - felt quite uncomfortable still, tummy cramps, back ache etc.
Did some research on the web - was shocked and horrified by some of the stories I'd read - and boy are there alot of them!
So i rang up the doctors to see if it should still be uncomfortable 24 hours later. Doc said - it will take about 24 - 48 hours to settle down , as effectively something that's not supposed to be in there is. Ok. So I waited another 24 hours.
Hand enough - paranoi starting to set in - so Phoned up and asked for one of the doctors to check it was in the right place - as when it was fitted the doc wasn't sure it was in far enough.
Got checked out - different doctor said it was ok - the strings were showing by about 1 cm - when the doctor fitted she said she'd left 2cms - so it was assumed that it was moving into position hence all the cramping & everything.
Phew.
Period kicked in, a couple of days ahead of schedule - but lasted longer than usual - well over 7 days.
Still cramping, back ache. Feeling slightly burning sensations deep inside - only way I can describe it was as though there was a tampon that was wedged somewhere - felt very uncomfortable. When sitting down - it was as though I could feel something pushing down in weird places - making it really uncomfortable when driving & sitting.
Still gave it the benefit of the doubt.
Over this last weekend - terrible stabbing pains in my left side - and ocasionally right side. Uncomfortable pressure feeling when sat down, cramping & major constant backache.
Monday (this week), i rang up the docs to make an appointment to get it removed. Appointment made for next Monday.
Tuesday - pain still terrible, stabby pains taking my breathe away - really dangerous when driving. Tuesday morning phoned up and managed to get a late night appointment at the docs - where I managed to get her to remove it. I told her i thought I was going insane - all these pains and discomfort etc. She wanted to do a scan to check where it was - but I just told her to get it out - I couldn't cope with this for much longer (my pain threshold is fairly high - but the constant awareness of this was really wearing me down) - so she took it out.
She confirmed that it had been sat too low and that's why it was causing me so much discomfort and was surprised I'd managed to last two weeks with it like this!!!
So, offending item now removed. Was ok for a day - but have been bleeding with clots, bright red - as though i've been cut.
Surely - after just two weeks can it cause so much havoc?!
If I'd had read things beforehand (i wasn't given a leaflet or anything about this when it was suggested to me) - i wouldn't have subjected myself to this.
This is one of the scariest things I've had done to me - I knew things didn't feel right - i'm just hoping that things settle down soon.
Hope this helps someone out there - if it doesn't feel right - get it checked out sooner rather than later - I thought I was being a bit of a wimp bailing out after just 2 weeks - but as it proved - it was in the wrong place - so dread to think what else could have happened - as there aren't many pleasant stories out there!
I'm signing this message - so that when this bleeding & clotting stops - you can track down the answer - as I've not seen any answers to peoples questions as to how long this bit lasts once you have it removed! Not long I hope as I'm going away for the weekend!!!

Ok so I had my IUD put in to help control my endo as I've had 4 operations for it now. I had it in for 2 months and had to have it removed, I was in constant pain for 2 months and had spotting if not bleeding everyday, I couldn't handle the pain anymore. I had it removed on 3rd July and I have been bleeding so so heavy ever since with so many blood clots, I have no pain at all but basically have to change my pad every 2 hours although during the night I'm fine, don't wake up in a puddle or anything. Even tho I'm bleeding heavy I'm so glad I had it removed, I was upset it didn't work because it would have helped my endo but I couldn't handle the pain any longer.

Hi, so reading everyone's posts a few weeks ago made me super nervous to get my mirena out. We are ttc baby 3. I spotted slightly when it was taken out then 2days later had what seems to be a normal period for a week. No heavy bleeding like everyone else is saying. Hoping to ovulate now as normal. So please don't be nervous from reading everyone else's posts, everybody is different! And to the few posts who said their doctors refused to let you take out mirena? That is against the law first and second it's idiotic, doesn't make any sense that a doctor would ever even say that.

Anonymous said...

The mirena was the worst decision I've made for my body. I am a healthy 28 year old female who has suffered terribly heavy periods for her whole life. Not only was the mirena insertion a disaster (they couldn't get it in because my cervix wasn't clearly open to them?!?) but I bled even heavier than my usual period for two months straight. WITH unbearable contraction like shooting pains every week. I gained 8 lbs, lost my sex drive, and has fits of hysterical crying and depression.

I found this forum because I had the mirena removed today and what a surprise.....I'm bleeding extremely heavily. How can my body take so much blood loss?!? I suppose I want to know when it will end. I'm a huge advocate for NO MIRENA e since no doctor has been able to explain my symptoms or offer any help. Any idea of when I can wear a thong instead of a diaper again?

I had the Mirena IUD in for 5 years. The first 6-12 months were pretty average but NO issues after that & well worth it to me :)

Removal required some 'digging' by an OB/Gyn but after 5-10 mins.. All good :D

What a helpful site this has been!

I can't believe someone described that when having Mirena she actually felt like a BABY MOVING inside of her. That's exactly what happened to me a while back!! I even did 2 pregnancy tests just to be sure ... since the ever-growing tummy and other symptoms were there too.

I had mine taken out 1,5 weeks ago due to all these symptoms. I just didn't feel like myself and started to really be desperate about my weight and the fact my increased exercise didn't help whatsoever. Tired of the comments asked about a 4th child and feeling uncomfortable with the horrendous acne and food cravings.

As I walked out the clinic I felt NORMAL again, I was so relieved. The gyn wasn't too happy taking it out but I said there was no way of convincing me otherwise. I had it for 18 months and even that was too long.

I've been extremely happy ever since the removal. After a few days started to bleed really heavily and still going. I've always had heavy periods so I'm not shocked but even after giving birth to 3 babies I never had this much bleeding. Still I'm feeling relieved, I feel like it's all coming out of my system.

I never want to have you again, Mirena! I will live my life happily ever after without you. Vasectomy will be the next step ...

I only had mirena in for 5 days before I had it taken back out. I had too many side effects ie. cramping, bloating, weeping etc. 2 days after it was removed I started bleeding heavily bright red with clots. Since I had it put in 5 days after my period started and taken out 5 days later, I'm not due for my period for another 2 weeks. All this bleeding for only having mirena for 5 days? What kind of hormone is in this thing? Does anyone know of anything that offers relief from all this bleeding? I feel like I'm going to bleed to death!

I had mirena in for 1yr 6wks after my second child and while I cant remember how the bleeding was, I had it removed due to its links with depression. I suffered post natal depression and later severe depression to the point it almost split me and husband up. After I gave birth to twins I was put on about 3 dif combined pills but none agreed with me went to get the copper iud as no hormones in it and they put me on mini pill until I had it fitted apparently because I take migrane where face tingles I should never have been on a combined pill. Got the copper one in and bleeding has been horrendous. Lasting 6 wks right thru tampax towels and clothes felt dirty bloated and misserable 4wjs no bleed then back to same again. Number of visits back to dr put me on mini pill as well as coil no change went to see a dif dr and as of yesterday I now have merina back in although I have voiced my concerns about depression returning. At least I now know the early signs and can seek help straight away if need be. Dr said my only other option is injection if this doesn't help. I did ask to be sterilised but was told no point as it wont help my period.

I have had the mirena for 3 years and its been hell! When i got it I bleed for months asked my doc to take it out he claimed I needed to give it time, i tried, woke up in pain one morning felt like I was in labor went to the er and i developed cyst on my ovaries something I never had a issue w/ before and my iud was out of place, again my doc showed no concern sayimg mirena is suppose to help with the cyst! I called around to planned parenthood but they told me before they could take it out I had to get it approved through medicaid. I cant hold on to any weight, my hormones are all over the place. After bleeding for what felt like eternity and started having a regular period. Yesterday i came on and was on for 1 hour am i pregnant are is my body just adjusting to the mirena and now im lucky enuff to b the ones who dont get a period?

Im 19 and im getting my mirena taken out on tuesday. I got a mirena due to severe heavy period an inability to take oestrogen concerception pills and or other treatments and losing twins and two other single baby pregnancy in two years and my last miscarraige I had clots the size of a golf ball and refused to give me a d&c. Unlike you girls I had to fight to get my mirena in because at 19 in australia they say its too young and now after 8 months im getting it out due to my partners dismay because of over a dozen uti's this year alone and painful sex and sometimes bleedi g after sex. Reading this scares me a little bit because of getting my mirena and ive started dark red bleeding today I hope I have better luck when I get removed

I`ve had a D&C twice and just a few months ago my doctor suggested that having a IUD would stop my menstrual cycle within six months.. Only one month my menstrual cycle was normal. I noticed I would have a longer menstrual cyle then after one wk. I would continue to bleed. Now I've been bleeding for 40 days. The last wk I was bleeding too much to the point. I was discharging huge blood clots. So I went to the ER. The doctor did a pelvic examine. She couldn`t feel the string. A ultra sound, X- rays and CT was taken. No trace of the IUD. I went to my doctor. He checked ( IUD) missing in action. I`m taking medication to stop the bleeding. I`m not bleeding as much but I feel drained.

I had it put in feb 2014. I bled the whole time apat from 4 days a month during which time my back would give way! I had reflexology and they said somethinig in my genitals was effecting my back- they didn't even know I had a coil!?!
Anyway after 7 months I'd had enough. I pulled it out. I could always feel the strings and it was easy to do, although they don't recommend it, no pain, out.

Since I have also been gushing blood and passing large clots but I've taken iron and lots of fluid and life carries on. I hope it passes soon and at least then I should have more than 4 'clean' days a month.

Very useful site thank you.

Ok, so I was on the mirena for 7 years (2 mirenas) and finally got it taken out 4.5 months ago with no bleeding for the next 5 weeks. I really didn't have any problems with it. No periods EVER but ovarian cysts twice. I have my "period" come every 27 days. first and second "periods" were just brown spotting. 3rd was what appeared normal and this last one was just brown spotting again. anyone had similar? A lot of pregnancy symptoms as well. sick to stomach, sore boobs, cramping bad, back pain. None of this I had before mirena. What ya think?

I have had Mirena for 3 years now.
I have been experiencing severe mood swings that can last for days. They are so bad sometimes, I cannot tolerate anybody! I had no idea where all of this was coming from.I was never like this! I also have the "baby pouch" and everyone thought I was pregnant again. Acne was never a problem, now I cannot get rid of it.My skin is itchy sometimes and my muscles ache. I am afraid to have it taken out I am scared I won't stop bleeding, I have not had a single period in three years. I do not like the symptoms or side effects and I am positive it is the Mirena. I also saw in the blog that they might of changed something in it? The whole deal is scary to me! I'm afraid they won't be able to find mine, it has been three years! I'm going to see my GYN and I think I am going to insist on it's removal. I want to be me again, and I'm tired of getting poisoned.

Given the other experiences posted here, I feel like I have had a mostly positive experience with Mirena. But I still had negative symptoms: Mood swings, irregular periods and spotting and possibly worst of all weight gain. I just had it removed after two years to have a second child. It was removed two days ago and today I started bleeding more than I ever had with any period. I'm cramping too, which never happens to me, and feeling light-headed. If I ever get an IUD again I would just get the copper one without hormones.

Thank you for this post. My Dr recommended 3 options for my heavy erratic periods and bleeding. (1) do nothing. (2) insert Mirena IUD. (3) Hysterectomy. Option 3 is ridiculous and after reading this im totally going with option 1. I just turned 50 and i think i will just wait this out until i get through menopause.

I feel slightly out of place cus I'm so young! 19, healthy weight, and I have a fibroid tumour in my uterus the size of a grapefruit! These rumours are only common in older women around their late 30s. I struggled with loads of pills having an adverse effect on me such as mood swings, heavy bleeding 'flooding' and so was suggested by my gynaecologist to have the mirena to help. I didn't bleed at all for 11 months with the mirena, until I actually expelled it, then hell broke loose.. I experienced horrible contraction cramps before I expelled the coil, no average painkillers helped at all, I had heavy clotting and flooding (the amount of blood was unlike anything I had seen before, clots the size of my palm and plenty of them) when I was rushed to hospital I went into shock as I had lost so much blood and was obviously horrified, was given transanemic acid for bleeding and iron tablets for anaemia. It happened again two days after and I was kept in hospital overnight to moniter my blood pressure and obs. Since then, I've had random heavy bleeds which settle after taking transanemic acid. I dread to think what would be happening if I didn't have the it. I'm so scared, I don't know if it's having the coil expelled that has done this to me, or that coupled with my fibroid tumour. I'm considering having a dangerous op to have my tumour out which had the potential to leave me infertile :( I hate the mirena for putting me through this, it's very isolating and scary. Wish I had known more of the risks.

So is it normal to bleed every day after insertion. I got mine on the second of this month. and I have been using super tampons. And still I'm going through so Manny a day. I had a c section may 28 so I get super intense cramps. And headaches daily.

Had my Mirena since June 2011, just got it removed 9/15/15. My OB said he was "confused" as to why I wanted it out. I said, mood swings, hair loss, weight gain (37lbs), and my last two FSH levels were 65 and 67.3, supposedly post-menopausal...I'm 45. He said, well there's no guarantee you won't get another period and you had this put in because of heavy periods. Mind you I'm an RN and we had a whole discussion about how I understood everything he was saying but I still wanted it out. So, I am wondering if anyone has been "post-menopausal" with the Mirena but then restarted your periods after removal?

Age 33 after baby #4 had copper IUD inserted due to PCOS-went 11 years without a stitch of any problem. Replaced in March 2012 with exact same brand paraguard brand copper IUD due to doctors advice and age of the appliance. June 2015 a random heavy bleed began and Nurse Practitioner removed the current copper IUD in an office setting to do an estriadol sampling to see if I was menopausal the discovey became a reality.. Late July this year it was recommended I have my method of birth control changed to THE "MIRENA' as it was primarily with progesterone which decreased bleeding...NOT-has made life miserable but with recommendation was inserted with reluctancy the later part of this past August 2015. I remarried 18 months ago and at age 47 since the insertion of the THE "MIRENA" for the past 7 weeks I have been bleeding a constant period.
Did not do any research and am now reading on the side effects of this, breast tenderness, mood swings, weight yes...this weight gain of 7 lbs in this short time frame!!
**Do not recommend this method and going forward I fear what COULD happen after reading posted testimonies.

I guess some people take better to the mirena then others. I have had mine in for 2 years now and have had no issues what so ever. My period rarely shows up, if I diet I lose weight at the same rate as I did before I had it. I have no cramping no hair loss no nothing. I hope you all went and got your mirena checked after insertion as my doctor told me to do so and everything has been fine. Usually problems start at the beginning and the company would actually replace your mirena if you issues showed up before 6 weeks after insertion. I'm so happy with my decision to get the mirena and when I hit 5 years I'm sure I will be looking into getting another one. :)

Unknown said...

You are suppose to get your mirena checked before 6 weeks after insertion to see if it is properly in place. If it is not in place Mirena would replace it for free. I was told if I was bleeding then it is out of place and I did not bleed and have no issues no weight gain no tender breasts no nothing just happiness with my decision. Sorry for your complications, I sure hope your doctor let you know about getting it checked after insertion.

Before I begin, I just want to express my appreciation to the person that started this thread and to all of those who have posted! I had my Mirena inserted Jan 2011, which was the most horrific and painful day of life; I literally went into full blown shock during the insertion. After the insertion, I was bed ridden for three days and spotted nonstop for 4 months. After the 4 months, I still had a period every month.which before Mirena, I would have a period once every three or four months. During the first six months, I seriously contemplated having the Mirena removed due to a ten pound weight gain, choosing sitting on the couch instead of going for the daily jog..hair loss, headaches every day, constant lower back ache, swelling of feet and hands, etc etc...but, I was terrified to have anybody go in there and was trying to find a doc that would just give me a hysterectomy to remove that Mirena. So, on October 6, 2015 I finally had it removed!! The first attempt to have it removed three weeks prior, the doc couldn't locate the strings..so had an ultrasound and yup, the strings were coiled up in the cervix. So before my return appoint - he had me take cytotec to ripen the cervix the night before and the morning of the procedure ....having it removed was a breeze to having it inserted; the most painful part was when the doc had to clamp the cervix before he fished around in there to try to locate the strings, but voila! About a minute after the clamp, he pulled it out of there!! Phew..was so so liberating!! When I walked out of the office, I felt like me again ..like I was reborn!! And now 4 days later, my hair isn't coming out in clumps, I'm no longer bloated and I am actually so energetic!! I have been bleeding since the removal, the heavy watery stuff and changing my tampoom and pad every 2 hours, but it is starting to slow down. Having it removed was the best thing I have ever done! Please do not hesitate or delay having it removed!!

I have had a Mirena for 3 years, and have had a fairly text book experience, i.e. irregular and heavy bleeding for first 12 months, then light spotting for next two years. Fortunately, I have had no pain or noticeable side effects. My problem is that after three years my "spotting" has become heavier and significantly longer. This month I had a 22 day period. I am 52 with no signs of entering menopause and have a 54 year old sister who is still regularly ovulating. (will this ever end??) I am not sure how many months I can stand of 3+ weeks of bleeding. Doctor says the lining in my uterus has thinned so much it is very unstable, which is causing the continual light bleeding, but there is no problem. Easy for her to say! I have decided to switch doctors. Will keep you posted as to what I decide to do. After reading the scary stories of heavy continual bleeding after removal, I am not sure which is worse. Any advice?

I had my Mirena for slightly over one and a half years after my second child. I did not get it put in until almost 8 months after my second child, sex was not even on the radar with breastfeeding and having moved and buying a house! but I had your regular bleeding and spotting for about 6 months and then really didn't have anything regular but spotting whenever it decided two spots afterwards. I have severe mood swings and irritability and a very low sex drive. It didn't dawn on me that I started telling my husband about 8 months afterwards that I just didn't feel like myself anymore and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I chalked it up to working full time with two kids and the stress of getting home a little later than I used to with our new house and trying to prepare dinner and etc. It led to a point where my husband and I started seeking counseling and then it was finally pinpointed that it could be my Mirena with my hormonal imbalance. I had been treated with thyroid issues previously and I had all of those things screened and all of my levels repeatedly were normal, no meds needed. I finally went to see my doctor, shared all of my concerns and he said it was extremely important for me to listen to my body, as well as he was listening to me and said it was time for me to get it out. He said honestly there was not a lot of evidence based medicine on it, but that there are always somebody who does not fit standard deviation. I truly believe that that is new with sensitivity to medicines in really not feeling like myself. I have to say I walked out of that office feeling a lot better. Especially after he showed it to me when he took it out and asked me if I wanted to take it home stuff on it and spit on it! it was just as painful going in as it was coming out but nothing excessive other than that pinching feeling. But I am now on days 6 with up and down bleeding and clotting to the size of half golf ball sizes, some days a liner, some days 2 tampons. my bleeding has gone from bright blonde to a darker blonde and I'm not sure but I'll probably call the doctor tomorrow. he tells me that I need to give it about 4 weeks for medicine to leave the body and then in about 6 weeks to give him an update. I was screened for an antidepressant due to the mood swings that I was having, but they said I clearly did not fit the profile to be on any medicine and I completely agreed knowing me. My ob told me why would I ever be medicated for birth control but then be medicated for my mood swings and that it didn't make any sense. Since I was post baby I can't say that weight gain was really a concern. However I had been working out and did my first half marathon and I really have just had extremely slow weight loss so hoping to see that improve with my exercise activity now. Hubs is getting a vasectomy, done with birth control! as much as it is it was nice to have very light spotting period sometimes, but no regularity to it. I'll gladly take a normal cycle any day since that's what my body supposed to do! Thanks to whoever started the string and good luck to all you ladies!

On my 3rd Mirena, had it inserted after my baby was 10 weeks old standard at my OBGYN office. Bled for a couple weeks then it stopped, the day my baby turned 1 I started my first cycle which lasted 7 days rather than the normal 3-5 I have become accustomed to with the mirena. 10 days after it ended once again I am starting my period so what gives?!
I did notice recent weight gain however I am attributing that to late evening meals due to sports activities my kids are participating in and also came to realize I have been battling depression off and on for some time now.

I am on day 27 of bleeding after Mirena removal. I have been passing large clots and on two different meds that haven't helped. I go in for a d&c this week to hopefully reset everything. I never had a problem with the Mirena while inserted, but this past month of my life has been terrible.

I know this is way old but wanted to add in my experience. I loved my mirena. I had my first one in four five years and my second for two and a half. I had my second mirena removed Feb 5th and two days later spotted a bit with. reddish/brown and some small clots. I had a sharp pain this morning and started spotting again. My husband and I are TTC and my doctor told me to wait until my first cycle happens.. Now I'm just waiting....

I just had the Mirena taken out Feb.15, 2016. I had it inserted April 23, 2015. I can't believe I had every side effect that you could possibly get: the bloating, weight gain, insatiable appetite, headaches constantly and hormonal swings that rivaled The Wicked Witch of the West! Now when I went to have it removed all the doctor said to me before I left the office was, "Okay, It's done. Have a great day." She did not warn me that I would be bleeding with clots the size of four of my fingers put together. She didn't prepare me for the extra blood loss. NOTHING! All I can say is STAY AWAY FROM THE MIRENA!!!

I gained 25 lbs, bloated exhausted, moody, couldn't concentrate, infections, and really bad diarrhea, plus hot flashes
Finally took it out Wednesday by Friday I bled through my pants five times. Bleeding through a tampon every hour.
I'm relieved to have it out, but scared of permenant consequence. I've read it put lots of woman into menopause.
I'm only 34.
Doctors should not be recommending this.

I had a Mirena inserted after a genealogical procedure, so I was under anaesthetic, 5 1/2 years ago so I can't comment on what it was like to be inserted. I had a wonderful 5 years of no period at all. I did how ever started to pile on the kilos (pounds,I am in Australia) not sure if I just loved my food or was it the Mirena IUD so I started to reseach side effects and decided against having another one re-inserted much to the women's clinic dismay. I had it removed on 1st of July, I was told I would have a period again when my cycle was due I looked at the nurse strangely because I hadn't had a period in 5 years so when the hell was that going to be. She told me it would be a regular period maybe a few days longer until my hormones settled. WELL.... I have now bled for 8 days with no signs of stopping, passing blood clots the size of my fist. I can't go a few meters of a bathroom I have gone through packets of super tampons and maternity pads aarrgghhh! When does it stop??? This is how I found this blog, I was starting to think I need to go to hospital as I have had a bad birthing experience with haemorrhaging and this is up there. I just wish I was informed of this side effect and given advise on what to do and for how long until you seek medical advice. I feel like I'm having 5 years worth of periods now!

Fiona, I passed blood clots as well. I bled over a month. I was put on different oral birth control, sometimes tripling my dose. Nothing helped. I finally had a d&c done and that worked. If you are passing clots as big as your fist, I would see your doc. You could become anemic. From what I read, I believe my body stopped producing its own progesterone.
Goodluck

If you are in perimenopause age, then your heavy bleeding post-IUD is very likely a result of that. The IUD was probably what was KEEPING you from bleeding so heavily. At 43, I began hemorrhaging during my periods, so that's why I got a Mirena. Bleeding had been MUCH lighter, although I did spot nearly every day for the first year. Now in year 2 starting to form a more reliable bleeding pattern.

Hie.. I came across this discussion. My problem is similar. I got D&c done last December after having to suffer very heavy and prolonged bleeding, 2 months to be exact when my doctor suggested I should go for D&c they put in a merina iud after the d&c and I was told I will have spotting for a couple months and then it will stop. And it did stop after around 3 months. And I had no other problems because of the merina but a week back as I had gained too much weight (I didn't know until I read the comments here that weight gain can possibly be because of merina) so last week I started walking and working out and eating healthy and yesterday suddenly I started bleeding. Is this normal? Because my doctor told me that I will not bleed until I get it removed. Is it possible that I might have accidentally removed the merina when I worked out? Please help me out if you can.. I am very confused as to why I am bleeding. (I am not having very heavy bleeding but yes it's happening) please help me out. Thanks in advance.

I had my mirena for about 2 years and had it taken out 3 weeks ago due to weight gain and loss of sex drive. My periods had stopped almost completely which was mostly good since I had very heavy periods before the Mirena which is why I chose to replace my copper IUD with this one. When it was removed I had light spotting for two or three days and then bleeding became heavier and heavier. Mood swings galore, weird food cravings and more bleeding! Really hoping it's coming to an end soon but seems to be getting heavier everyday. My doctor said nothing about what to expect after removal....super disappointed in this part of the Mirena experience

I had mine inserted after my son was born (age 6 now) and removed it myself last summer. While on iud, my periods were extremely light with no cramping, and somewhat sporadic. After removal, my periods have been extremely heavy, bleeding through super tampons and overnight pads every hour during heavy days. Other than that, I've had no differences in my cycle or PMS.

I had the Mirena inserted two years ago. Spotting the entire time aside from 1 month! My husband and I finally had it and I went in to get it removed. Light spotting the first two days after removal, then clotting and changing super plus tampon every 1-2 hours! I am only on day 4. Was never told this would be normal, so I was alarmed until I found multiple links to this issue! Unacceptable! My gyn did say advil will help slow the flow. I believe it does to an extent. She also gave me an RX ? __ acid? that should help, but haven't taken it yet since that can cause blood clots. I am 51. I now know to expect this for awhile! I went on the mirena for heavy periods. I never would have gone on it if I knew what I know now! I am now scheduled for an ablation that I should have had in the first place.

I had mirena coil inserted on advice from gyni, i was suffering with severe pain, heavy periods which seemed to come and go when they please but were always brown and lumpy and lasted about 4 days but could come every 2 weeks. After have mirena my first experience was I became the devil and wanted to smash everything up and kill everyone! It settled down after a week and I still had bleeding and pain for 3 months, I had mirena for roughly 18 months and felt I had to have it out because although my periods stopped my pain didn't and I got lots of cysts every month I got them, I put a stone of weight on and had enough! It wasn't as painful as I was told removing it, I had spotting for 2 and half days. About 2 and half weeks later I had a period which was a week long, then I started having itchy problems which felt like cystitis On and off and about 2 weeks later another period, wich was a week long, then 2 weeks later which is where I am now am 11 days bleeding bright red blood and no sign of it stopping! Got doctors today cause not feeling great very tired
