Weight Loss! Finally!

Hey ladies, sorry it's been so long since I've written. Work is hectic (what's new though!), so it's hard for me to get to blog.

I am pleased to report that I am finally losing weight, although I finally had to break down and join Weight Watchers. I do highly recommend the program though, I have been on it a week and a half so far. I have already lost 7 pounds, and feel better than I have in months!! The program is really awesome, and I haven't felt hungry or bummed out even once. I have non-stop energy, especially now that I am exercising even more. I finally feel like my body is totally returned to normal, and of course, seeing weight loss results feels damn good. Also I'm pleased to report that my stomach has stopped bloating at random intervals, which it was doing on and off even after the IUD removal.

I am proud of those of you who got the IUD removed. Remember, you know what's best for your body, now give your doctors hell!!

I'd like to know if you got mirena removed? All of your symptoms lead to a rejection of the IUD. Mine drove me crazy, but I had it for 2.5 years. I am finally Mirena free and life couldn't be better!

Life after Mirena is great! In just 5 days since removal I have lost 4 lbs, my acne is going away, bloating gone. (I am taking Mircette since I absolutely cannot get pregnant again.) I have not changed my routine one bit. My symptoms were migraine, weight gain, greasy skin, mood swings, hair loss, no sex drive, acne. My Gyno said it has "no side effects". Whatever!!! He wanted me to give it more time but after 2 horrible years with that stupid thing I put my foot down and insisted! Ladies, get it out and you will NOT regret it! The only positive thing I can say about it is that I have not had a period for 2 years. No period is so not worth the misery you get in return. Looking forward to shedding the remaining 10-20lbs without having to starve or exercise like a freak. Hope this helps someone else!

I have had the mirena coil taken out 2 days ago after about 5 years and 2 coils, I have put on over a stone but just put it down to me eating too much, but after reading all your comments I think it mustv been the coil!!! Also for the past 2 years have had infection after infection, thrush and bacterial vaginosis nearly every month, thats why i finally decided to have it out as I thought it was causing infection. 2 days later my stomach is bloated very painful and im bleeding heavily, i just hope it doesnt last long, am also not sure if this is my period or just bleeding. I have had trouble trying to lose weight too but put it down to my willpower. I was swimming 4 times a week so you wouldnt think id have put on weight. Im now hoping after reading everyones comments that my weight comes back off again. I have been on anti depressants for 2 years not sure if that has anything to do with it or it could just be me. I am having a break from contraception now see how it goes.

I had the mirena inserted on Jan 2011. And after reading some of the comments here about mirena, i can relate. I have had so many infections down there and didn't know why.. I'm easily irritated and would get dizzy at times. I do get my periods regularly, but at first i didn't, this went on for 5 months until i drinked a ganoderma coffee which made my cycle come back. I did have pain and discomfort during intercourse at first, but not any more. Recently i started eating less and doing zumba, the results weren't what i expected. I lost about 5 lbs. So i got to thinking that losing weight was impossible. But now i know that the mirena is the cause. I have not yet set an app to get this thing removed, but will definitely do so in the following days.

Tracey from down under - Well it's been three weeks since the removal, I think I don't look as bloated but can't say if my moods have changed but I think I have more energy but then I had the Novasure procedure and my body is climatising to that.`I don't have a scale, (I should) but will report back on my weight shortly. I think it's a shame that others haven't come back and posted their results after removal, anyway I shall provide a few over the next couple of months or so. I have also read some comments that the procedure I just had done also causes bloating and weight gain, it's hard to understand as hormones don't come into it but god knows.

You really expanded upon a subject that I usually don't care much about and made it very exciting. This is a unique blog that I will take note of it.

I am 27 years old, I had the mirena for almost 5 years. I had a handful of light periods in those 5 years. I also had 3 UTIs and a ton of yeast infections. I've always been thicker, but athletic. I'm 5'10. I weighed 180 when I started and I got the mirena removed yesterday and was weighing in at 213! I had it removed because my husband and I are going to start trying to conceive in June and I wanted to give myself a chance to regulate again. I tried so hard to lose weight over the past 5 years and just COULDN'T! I'm praying that I begin losing again now that its out. I want to be at my healthy weight before getting prego. Side effects after removal? I feel a little lethargic and cloudy today. Trying to stay positive and let 7-10 pass so my hormones can balance out. Will check back soon!

I have had a mirena in since 2002 sometime after baby number 3. It's been replaced twice. The last one just a few months ago. I have slowly gained weight over this time which I have put down to getting older ( now 38 ). Probably 15 kgs in this time. It's very frustrating and all these symptoms people are explaining Re so true. I thought I was just doing too much, being lazy at other times and basically turning into a fat slob. I am seriously considering having it removed as I have spent the last month battling fatigue, nausea and more weight gain. I look 5 months pregnant and have not been able to drop an ounce of weight. now I know why!!! Hubby and I need to talk! Would be interested in any other long term users results after removal.

This is Tracey from down under - Well has been nearly six weeks since the removal of my mirena and I had the novasure ablation procedure and obviously my body would be acclimatising still, but I seriously think I'm not as bloated looking, I will weigh myself again shortly but after the novasure I was unable to do my normal exercise cause they bruised my hip. I do think I'm better but then I have a lot going on in my life which isn't great. It is such a shame hardly anyone has provided ongoing results which makes me wonder about us blaming the mirena. I'll up
date shortly anyway in relation to my weight and energy in the event I help others with their decision to or not to keep the bugger.

Sorry Tracey again, I just want to add that I had the mirena removed cause I truley think the mirena contributed to my weight gain. Just for your info....I took this seriously as in this site andthe posts....

Hi, I'm 45 and had my last child at 39 1/2. Post pregancy I could not lose, was bloated, had indigestion, lost hair, hot flashed and generally lathargic. It took 5 years to finally figure out my body needed progesterone. My obgyn did a sonogram that showed I had a polyp which is caused by excess estrogen in the uterine lining. She prescribed the mirena and it has been awesome...exactly what my body needed...no indigestion, no more bleeding gums (when flossing), hair is growing and Ive lost 12 lbs so far. Every woman's body is different and needs different things at different times. Just because the mirena doesn't work for you doesnt mean it won't work for someone else...it's just not what your body needs right now. Several years from now I may not like it anymore because my body doesn't need it....don't dis the mirena because it isn't working for you it just might not be right for your body at this time.

I had my first mirena iud inserted March 2006 after my second son was born. It was the best choice of birth control for me because I had breakthrough bleeding with every oral contraceptive I took. My first 5 years were amazing as far as the no periods went, but my sex life sucked....and I was only 26!!! The doctor told me it would affect my sex drive but I figured I could deal with it. In 2011 I had my new mirena put in. My periods came back and I just didn't understand why. I figured my body was just reacting differently this time around. As far as weight gain goes, I work out 5-6 days a week and I watch everything I eat. I didn't gain weight but I definitely could not drop the weight. My trainer says I should be anorexic if u look at my diet and exercise regime and I'm stuck at 133 lbs. everything was fine until I went in for my annual this past February! The mirena had migrated up into my uterus. The doctor said my best option was to get it removed. 3 ultrasounds later I went in to get it removed and my obgyn could not get to my iud :(. So next Thursday I am having surgery under anesthesia to get it removed!!!!! I am super stocked. I can't wait to get rid of the fog in my head, to get my sex drive back and to finally see the results of my hard work n dedication at the gym!!!! Keep you all posted! These blogs truly showed me that there is hope!!!!

I've had my mirena for 4 years and LOVE it! I personally LOST about 15lbs in the first 6 months of having it.
as a health care professional I can assure you that Mirena DOES NOT CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN!!! People just tend to blame the extra lbs on it. With this being said, I'll have to look into its effects on weight LOSS (rather, the inability to lose weight)

This site is the most valuable and informative forum I've yet to read I concerning Merana! Wow!
I've had my IUD in for 2 years this July. What a nightmare it has been . I'm up 60 pounds that's in 2 years of running , training , dieting extreme to no avail of losing more than10 pounds . I've had insane mood swings , feeling down right psychotic . My poor amazing husband:( the things I've put him through.... Fussy , irritable , no sex drive . We are still " newly" wedds.
I'm removing Merana June 7 th ! CAN NOT WAIT for deliverance from this mess. Prior to the IUD I was the most mild tempered , patient , no anxiety or depression , lighthearted , loving soul! I miss her and I'm tired of being fat and weepy ! Thank you all for your honesty <3

Happy health to us all!

Wow! After reading all of these posts I seriously want to cry! Not because I am sad, but because I am relieved.
In 2010 I started nursing school, and because I already have 2 children I opted to have the Mirena placed.
Over the past two years I began to notice that my moods were different, my appetite was changing, my short-term memory was hazy, and my weight was constantly INCREASING and rarely decreasing (not to mention the changes in facial hair, acne, lethargy, and the loss of interest in sex).
At first, I contributed all of these physical and mental changes to the stressors of nursing school. However, after I graduated and passed the NCLEX I saw no changes in any of my symptoms. I eat fairly well and I consider myself to live a pretty active lifestyle... I'm a Tahitian dancer, I do a 5k run 4-5 times a week, and since my husband is a personal trainer I am constantly in the gym. With that being said, why is it that I have managed to gain 30 lbs since 2010? The answer now seems clear to me...Mirena!!!
My pre-baby weight was 115 lbs. and after both kids I weighed 130. Now, I am currently 5'1" and 165 pounds!!! My primary doctor says it's due to possible muscle weight, but I disagree wholeheartedly. I called my GYN doctor and am scheduling to have this IUD removed ASAP!
Thank you all for sharing your stories and putting me at ease :) I will update in a few months.

After having the mirena IUD installed for adenomyosis about 15 months ago, I finally removed it in an act of desperation. I removed it myself with no incident after reading this blog along with many others and then reading about other women's descriptions of DIY remova online. I was driven to do this because of the weird stranger I have become since opting for the mirena after a couple of horrible years of periods that can only be described as bloody torture. My uterus was double the normal size, I was filling a large tampon every hour for the first few days and had cramps that my prescription narcotics couldn't begin to cut through. In addition, I have autoimmune inflammatory (psoriatic) disease which affects 70% of my body as well as many of my joints. I have gained about 10 pounds in the last year and, while I was given a delightful respite from the periods from hell (and blood transfusions I had to get for severe anemia), I have become a horrible, miserable person. I find no happiness, I am exhausted from simple tasks, my ovaries sometimes hurt so badly I wake up in the middle of the night from a dead sleep with lightening pains. I cannot think straight (I should mention that I do not take any drugs and follow a gluten free diet, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, visiting an acupuncturist regularly and raising my two kids) and my new marriage is becoming a total disaster. I am a neurotic asshole and have become incredibly negative and self hating. I don't know myself anymore and spent the last year in a degree of quiet suicidal ideation that is very troubling. On the brink of losing my marriage and jumping off a building, I had to remove the mirena.

Part 2: In the last year, my vision has gotten very blurry and my ears have been ringing nonstop, as well. I can tell you that nothing in this world is more anxiety producing than mood swings you are incapable of predicting or controlling in combination with a high pitched, constant pitch in the ears. All noise makes me hurt, physically and everything is irritating. My kids have always been my joy and we have moved to a new country, only to find that my exhaustion, unpredictable moods, increased joint pain and general malaise has not just handicapped me but my family as well.

I am now on Day 5 after removal and was bleeding fairly heavily with clots and manageable cramps that have both reduced markedly today. I look like I have lost 10lbs and my desire to wake up and eat IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, (what fresh hell is this--that's what I did when I was pregnant and I gained nearly 80lbs!!!) is completely gone. I'm back on my grain-free, sugar free diet (for management of celiac disease and inflammation) I am less exhausted today and after a few days of crippling crisis-level depression and anxiety, I feel more sane. Sadly, my ears are still ringing and my new sensation is one of lessened but noticeable heaviness on my bladder and swelling/bloating of the abdomen. My appetite is nearly completely gone. I have been beyond senstive--much like when I was pregnant and cannot describe my need for relief. I hope that it is coming. I got this mirena put in in the states where there is no warning of use in women with a history of depression or other mental illness. Here in Canada, where I now live, they will not in good conscience prescribe it for a woman like myself with a history of complex PTSD. I am glad it is out and that the feeling of self-violation when I took it out of myself has now passed and I am less afraid of bleeding to death.

Now that I have removed it, I worry that the adenomyosis is going to come raging back and I hope that there will be some degree of prolonged relief for a while while I try to adjust my body's hormone level and potential toward inflammation with diet and exercise.
I am using progesterone cream 3x a day to combat the hormonal shift as well as taking Vitex tincture and some herbal/vitamin supplements for thyroid function and immunity.

Hoping for the best. Thanks so much for writing and maintaining this blog. Mirena is a death sentence.

I am 33 years old and had mirena put in 11 months ago after the birth of my first child. I've gained 33 lbs since. I have acid reflux and it's so much worse on mirena. Feel like I'm burning up all the time. I've also had 5 UTI's in the last year. I don't have insurance and desperately need it removed, but hear it's a whopping 2000 dollars! I don't recommend it to anyone, it's horrible!

I'm right there with both of you! I started on the shot when I was 16. I'm five feet tall, so when I gained twenty pounds I was so unhappy.it was the biggest I ever was.I always weighed between 100&110lbs, so going to 130 bothered me.so I switched to morena a year ago. Since then I put on another 40lbs. I've been doing yoga, run everyday, cut out soda, drink lots of water,e at my fruits and veggies, and take vitamins....total lifestyle change..I've been at it six months and only five pounds.I can't seem to lose more no matter how hard I work. I also have acne, Extreme cramps, pain with sex, and fatigue. My doctor told me the same thing as most of these wom en....that morena wouldn't do that, but its I obviously not the case. I'm planning on getting it removed soon, despite what my doctor says...

T said...

Yes they are mean, ice heard from many women that t heir d doctor becomes defensive and insists its a problem with the body and lifestyle, and not the morena. Its makes a person feel bad when they have been working hard and their doctor says its not good enough! Just try to remember, its their job toget us paying for the medicine.

I hate mirena! It has made me gain 30 lbs in less than a year. I've had 5 UTI's in that time and have felt like crap! I'm having it removed next month thank heaven, can't wait! During my pregnancy I was looking so good and even after for the first few months but right after I had mirena put in I packed on the pounds!

I am making an appt today to get this thing out of me!! 3 years ago I kicked my butt to lose 30 lbs & be in the best shape of my life. My husband had a vasectomy & I wasn't on birth control but my single friends were telling me how wonderful this mirena thing is & not having a period sounded amazing so a year ago I decided to go for it. Since then I gained 20 back no matter how hard I kill myself working out & how little I might eat in a day. I'm moody & that wasn't me ever. My breathing is labored at times & have no energy at times & have to force myself to get up & get motivated, also not like me. No sex drive at all! Pains in my right side are so bad in the morning that I thought it could be my kidney so drink lots of cranberry juice & sometimes it helps. But I'm convinced its this contraption! Hubby says to take it out now because he hates seeing me so miserable! Now reading all of these comments I'm sitting here crying like a idiot because I'm not crazy... it is this thing! Thank you for sharing your stories!

Thank goodness for this site! I don't know why doctors seem to keep insisting to me as well as other people who have posted on this site that Mirena does not cause weight gain. It seems obvious that it does!! I was about 132 lbs when I got it put in a year and a half ago. I am now at 144 lbs and no matter how much I work out and diet, I can never lose more than 5 lbs. When I exercised and dieted this way before I had the Mirena, I was able to keep my weight at 126-128 lbs. I too have been experiencing a constantly bloated look,. especially around my tummy. It is SO frustrating! I used to be a commercial model and now I can't do it bc I have gone from a size 2/4 to a size 6/8. I haven't really had many other side effects except sometimes pain during sex (oh and my boyfriend could feel it sometimes and it freaked him out). Oh, and when I first had it inserted, my face freaked out and broke out in really bad cystic acne in my cheeks, on my chin, and on my jawline. I still get a cystic break out here and there before my period but not as bad. I got my Mirena removed today. Good riddance!!! I hope I can shed this excess weight like most of the people who posted here.

I am glad to see I am not alone in being miserable with the Mirena IUD. I had mine put in to lessen my once a month period bleeding. It did the opposite! I bleed everyday and the pain was horrible the first few months. I figured my body just needed to adjust to it. I started bleeding through a tampon and heavy pad every 15 minutes. I went to the ER. They pumped me full of estrogen, multiple times. I am 6 months out still bleeding uncontrollably with huge blood clots like everyone is talking about. After an ultrasound they figured out my Mirena fell out on it's own, most likely in a huge clot. I am still suffering with the bleeding and clotting. I have to wear shorts under my pants and spend my days in the rest room. I'm changing clothes all day long. I had PCOS my whole life and never had periods. I feel like this is a terrible pay back. Doctors kept saying everything looked good. They said I had a very small fibroid 2cm but that it couldn't be the cause of bleeding. 4 gynos told me that! They had no answers for the bleeding. They said it just happens to some women. I finally traveled 2 hours to see a specialist who has now diagnosis me with adenomyosis. I am having surgery in 2 weeks because I have yet to have kids. I still wish to become pregnant. The specialist will try to remove what is now 2 adenomyomas/fibroid like deep in the uterine tissue and repair what he can. I pray this helps and doesn't prevent me from having children. I still wonder though when they open me up if that really is what they are going to find. I do not experience the pain I hear about when women suffer from adenomyosis, now the Mirena has fallen out. However, everyone is different. I'll be back to let everyone know. I still think the Mirena did something horrible to my body. I never bled this heavy or had clots until the Mirena. I do not recommend it to anyone because it has only been huge nightmare in my life!

So you removed it yourself? Was it painful? It's that dangerous?

Anonymous said...

I had my mirena inserted two weeks ago. Tonight I removed it myself (with little difficulty and no pain). I am out of town visiting friends, and I have noticed that I have gained weight, didn't want to wear anything but comfy clothes and remained tired and irritable all of the time. I decided to search the web for some answers, and was devastated on the amount of negative experiences with Mirena. My husband looked at me and said, "honey, lets remove it right now". We did, and I already feel better.

In addition, I would like it to be known that my doctor had told me that there was NO side effects, even after I had asked him twice before he inserted Mirena. :-(

I am so happy to find this blog!!!!! I got in the mirena last year and gained. 10 Ibs in the first three months and by 12 months I was up. 17-20. Ibs. I stopped working out. Became lazy. I just realized everything started with the Mirena. I got it out this week & now I have the para guard which is a no hormone birth control. I am hoping my weight loss will jump start now. I am using myfitnesspal ap & logging my food. I can't fit into any of my clothes so this has to work. I need my body back I am single and cant continue this bad body image issue I have since starting the mirena and gaining the weight. Thanks yall I really am glad to have somewhere to vent,

Tracey, Sydney.

I had my Mirena removed in March. I do feel as though I changed in shape in my tummy, but in all honesty my weight hasn't changed dramatically, it would with exercise I think and a better diet. Anyway, I just can't say if the Mirena caused my bloated looking stomach and weight gain, nor and changes in mood. If it doesn't suit have it removed but is good for a lot of people with not many options. I've had the Novasure procedure, so I'm happy for that.

I have had mirena for almost 5 years I am due to get it removed but most definetly will not be getting another one. I am 21 years. Old I have gained almost 20 lbs my sex drive is definetly not what it should be I have tried everything exercising. Low calorie diets diet pills not eating and not even a pound lost I'm always bloated and uncomfortable even during intercourse my hubby loves me for but admits he misses my 120 lb body I'm ready to get my sexy back! Mirena has not only changed my mood my sex drive but my self confidence in my self
I can't wait for it to all changew

Hi, I also have the Mirena for five years now after having my 3rd child. Haven't lost any weight since having it inserted. Weighed 145lbs after one month of giving birth. Now I weigh a horrific 233lbs. Cannot lose weight have that weird tire in my mid section, which never had before. It gets bigger by the years. I have facial hair acne on my back, arms, lower part of the face, bloating, cramps, tenderness of breasts, loss of sexdrive, always tired no energy, moody and so on. Don't know what else to do. Hate being on the pill. It awful what women have to go through.

Hello All!
I am totally blown away. I had my Mirena inserted at my 6 wk post birth appt in April 2011. While I was still nursing my son I was able to lose all the weight and get back to pre pregnancy weight easily. I stopped nursing and slowly the weight crept back on. Despite eating 1200 calories a day and working out steadily my weight refuses to budge and even climbs. In addition, Ive continued lactating since I stopped nursing in Oct 2012! A lot of research prompted me to call and make an appointment to have this removed! Im going in on Monday. Does anyone have any other suggestions for an effective birth control that doesnt effect weight loss?

Thanks so much!

Hi, i'm new to this. I had my Mirena installed in May of 2013. I was 21 at the time and getting married, and thought it would be the easiest and most convenient form of birth control. My husband and I weren't looking to start a family until we were married for at least 2 years. For a while it was fantastic. I had some spotting every once in a while but I had been warned of that and was told it would go away in like 6 months. It did, so that was great. However, It seemed as if instantly after that 5-6 month mark, I had gotten VERY bad acne, like worse then it ever was in high school, and I generally have exceptional skin. I cried all the time, because it was so bad, and attributed it to the water in my husband's apartment or the weather change. I would sleep, all the time. On the upside of 10-13 hours! This was frustrating because my husband would always go to bed before me, and I would then be awake for sleeping in until 11:30 in the morning! So I was always bored, and tired, and never had any energy or motivation to do anything. Then I started noticing the weight gain. Everyone I had asked always says "You always gain weight when you get married" so i just figured It was that. However, I wasn't doing anything differently then I did before i got married and seemed to be the only one gaining weight. I started working out, and eating less, and trying to be more active, but my motivation dwindled. My mood swings were terrible, i'd cry every other night, and even had one memorable night where I had done something so out of character and just wanted to scream, I had literally had some fear I was developing a mental disorder or something. I haven't had a low sex drive as i have read is a common side effect, I actually have what seems to be an over active sex drive. Which you would think would be a good problem, especially for the hubby, but he has a 9 hr, 5 day a week job, where he is doing physical labor all day long, and he is just tired and wore out when he comes home, so sometimes sex is not on the forefront of his mind. So this would cause tension and cause mood swings and crying fits for me most every night. I was extremely insecure and unsure and doubted everything and everyone. Then I had noticed weight gain, and that developed my insecurity even more. I've noticed that I've gained upwards of 30 pounds! It never even crossed my mind that it could have been due to the Mirena and its hormones or whatever, but I had a melt down the other night with my mother and she mentioned that it could be my birth control. I brushed it off, and said it couldn't be, nobody ever said that could happen, and I always just forgot I had it.

So obviously I have a desire to get it removed now knowing that other women have been experiencing the same things, but i need help; I still need some form of birth control because my husband and I are not ready for a family yet. I have come to love the "no period" thing because mine used to be extremely painful and very heavy. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

And i hope that someone reads this and knows they're not crazy and the side effects are very real.

Hi Ladies, just stumbled on to this site and glad I did.
My experience with Mirena..I did have weight gain but its not because of Mirena I thought as I was successful in losing some kgs and always ended up gaining them back due to my binge emotional eating..nw after reading your posts I want to believe its due to Mirena. As for nw Iam doing every thing possible and its very hard to lose weight now..I was attributing it to my age(36) till now.I did have acne in my back n facial hair, never had these even during my teens, was always known for my clear skin..
My main issue was severe pain during and after intercourse along with bleeding.
I've never used a liner during the 'bleeding period' ..until last few months which is when i got some flow.
I ve had some reasonable flow now but its all the time and not sure whether its menstrual blood as it affects my prayers & sexual life.
I got this inserted due to a severe reaction towards copper IUD.

GOTTA READ!!!
Hi Ladies. I've had the Mirena IUD put in twice and it's amazing birth control. One thing I can't get over is the weight gain. Don't let the Dr's fool you into thinking that, "You're gaining weight because you're getting older!" That is non sense.
The first time at 23, I used the Mirena IUD and weighed 101 lbs. being on it for 5 years I've gained 40lbs. I'm a jogger and while I was on it, I kept gaining weight. Af 28 it was removed. In 3"months off of it, I lost 20lbs. After the Mirena was removed, I had three miscarriages and had to have a D&C. Then I got pregnant right a way and have a beautiful baby boy. I don't know if not having a period for 5 yrs had something to do with my miscarriages. They ran every test and said, I was capable of having a healthy baby. I did not stop having miscarriages until after I got scrapped to clean my insides (D&C).
After having my baby boy and me being 30, I wanted an effective birth control so I decided to go back on the Mirena IUD, it's been a year in a half and I've gained 20 lbs. I know my weight gain is not all in my head. The scale does not lie but the Drs do. I am having it removed next week. God Bless!

Hi I've read this blog periodically over the last couple of years, as I suspected that the mirena had contributed to my weight gain. I've also watched several youtube video's of women experiencing the same issues and it prompted me to opt out of re-insertion. It expired a couple of months ago. So it was removed yesterday and I think my mood has changed for the better. not sure, I'll keep u posted on the rest.

Updated from June 9, 2014 posting.
I took out my Mirena last week and already lost 4 lbs. my husband noticed the next day that my face wasn't swollen anymore. I feel a lot less bloated and my clothes fit easier. So thankful the Mirena IUD is out and I can get back to my old self.
It's obvious the IUD causes weight gain.... Good Luck ladies. Follow your instinct.!

I had a my Mirena put in after the birth of my son in 2005. I had always weighed around 120 lbs. Well I gained and gained and gained..60 lbs! not to mention migraines, mood swings, depression, no sex drive and so on. Well one day (2007) I noticed my Mirena was poking out of my cervix. I went to the doctor and had it removed. I decided I didn't want another one. I began to lose weight FAST. About 5 months after my IUD had come out I was down to 125 lbs. That's 55 lbs gone in 5 months! All other symptoms gone and I was feeling better then I had since before the birth of my son. Now honestly I didn't even realize at the time that my IUD had caused all of this until after the birth of my second son (2011)I had another one put in. Once again GAIN GAIN GAIN.... I put 2 and 2 together and that second IUD is out.. I will never get another one..!

I'm 51 and had the mirena inserted 5 months ago because prior to that I made the mistake of taking HRT - the doctor prescribed Estrogen only MASSIVE mistake - it caused pre cancerous activity in the womb and the lining of my womb became thick - I was then prescribed Norethisterone which made me feel near psychotic - I was then advised to have the Mirena - so I did... since then I've gained 40lbs, I feel depressed and moody, I get headaches, and womb ache, my hair is dry and unmanageable, I feel anxious, with joint pains, aches and tiredness - I feel in a catch 22 situation - I've been told if I have it removed my womb might thicken up again - but I can't bear how I feel on this coil - I don't know what to do - has anyone else had this experience for post menopausal womb thickening?

I had my marina inserted 13 months ago.
Reason: heavy bleeding, believed to be causing low iron levels - fatigue and migraines.
I am 49, 67kgs, fit and for 6-8 months after insertion was on a moderate-hard gym program and training for a few bike races - so, no reason to gain weight.
Diet did not change - predominately healthy with the odd bit of junk every now and then.

Very interestingly, and I don't see anyone mentioning this above, at the 'insertion' appointment, my weight was measured BUT/AND I was asked to SIGN AN INDEMNITY form from the manufacturers of marina, absolving them of any responsibility for weight GAINED after insertion (NO MENTION OF LOSS). Not having had any weight fluctuations over the past years, I remember agreeing/joking (sorry :() with my gyne that it is a life-style thing and folk who gain weight need to look at that aspect of their lives rather than blaming the marina!!! little did I know what was ahead for me....
In march or april I found this page while I was looking for answers after I had gained 4-5kg. I was mortified, angry, depressed AND felt FAT, never having been over 70kgs.
Having wept on my husband's shoulder for a day, I didn't do anything about it. Yesterday, I slumped to another low after having had a few annual tests done - all involving standing on a scale and putting on some gym kit and bulging out of it where it had been loose before. Instant depression and anger. I also keep thinking about that indemnity...I smell a rat!
And so...being a solutions driven person, and having read all of the above, I am phoning my gyne today to have it removed.
I am prepared to put up with the heavy bleeding and the migraines (which, incidentally, didn't stop)if it means regaining my shape - believe me I have tried to love myself, no matter what, but this is a big ask!!! :)
I will keep you posted about my progress ... starting with my gyne's reaction and her theory...if any....
Did any of you sign a form/indemnity/waiver?

The mirena made me gain a lot of weight even though I had it for only 4 months. I couldn't lose the weight no matter what. Also, it caused me all kinds of side effects, hormonal imbalances, estrogen dominance, silicona and copper toxicity, etc. I recommend everyone who is serious about stopping all their unbearable side effects to watch the video on this page: mirenadetox.

I am an older woman (45) and had the Mirena put in June 30th. At first it seemed fine, but now 6 months later, I have gained 20 pounds eating/drinking/working out the exact same as BEFORE the Mirena! I had no period for the first 5 months, but now I am spotting every single day, and have breast tenderness all the time. I am seriously considering having it taken out.

I strongly recommend watching this video to learn how to get rid of mirena's nasty side effects and understand how it is causing weight gain and other serious side effects. This video has helped me recover and get back to my normal self again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWdfrR7tU1k

I had Mirena placed 5 years ago. I discussed a male friend's concerns about the "prickly strings" of his wife's IUD and my OB/GYN assured me that she would cut the stings short. Well, that she did! For the past 4 years the APRN that has done my annual has told me she could not see my strings. Now, my insertion was not difficult and it has proven to be an effective, desirable form of birth control. I have LOVED my Mireana. But, I turned to Dr. Google because I was concerned about removal if my provider couldn't see the strings. I have read a gazillion horror stories about Mirena (insertion, side effects, difficult removals, etc). I have been SOOOOO anxious for 5 years!! Well my husband had a vasectomy recently and today I had it removed. And, IT WAS NO BIG DEAL!!!!! I was a mess for nothing. I just want everyone to know that Mirena is not, necessarily, a bad choice for all women. It was so great for me and I just wish I had never looked at all the horror stories out there. Good luck to you all!

My perceived Mirena symptoms were:
- bloating
- malaise / lack of enthusiasm
- no sex drive / grumpy all the time
- anxiety/depression (or at least made this worse)
- unwanted hair growth
- migraines with aura (intermittent)
- daily discharge
- seemed difficult to lose weight despite exercise, often hangry
- possible weight gain of 20lbs over 4years (hard to blame it all on Mirena, but I’d been increasing veggie intake a TON and nearly cut out starch and walk at least a mile more per day than before and saw no change at all. I’m 5’9” and 167-sh lbs, so a size 10)

Had Mirena removed 5/13. It’s been 4 weeks and a day. My experience, by week:

Week 1: No weight change. Mood higher than usual but could have been just optimism. Somewhat less hungry and had a little more energy. Feel less bloaty, though. My widest “belly” measurement dropped by about an inch. Some spotting. Had an episode at work that almost brought me to tears a few days after removal, could have been that particular anxious-y situation or partially due to hormones changing.

Week 2: Still no weight change, up or down. Haven’t had that heavy/bloaty lower gut feeling I associated with Mirena. I went on a 2-mile run/walk for the first time ever, 12 days after removing minera. I think I wouldn’t have had the motivation to do that before the removal (could just be confirmation bias). Content enough to try intimacy again.

Week 3. Spotting again. Is this a period? Guess not. I run a few more times. I think I might be down a pound, but I’ve also started cutting out the sugar and dairy, and watching portion sizes like a hawk, so can’t attribute it directly to Mirena. I’m probably only sticking to some sort of diet/exercise goals because having Mirena out means I’m on my own two feet and can’t blame anything. But, that seems to be enough to motivate me.

Week 4: No spotting. Little discharge, maybe half of what I’m used to. Somehow walking-running 2 miles every 2-3 days. Novelty has worn off of the health kick, but I don’t feel hopeless (which is new), so I’m keeping it up. My blood sugar seems to not dip so low as it used to, I don’t get hangry as bad, so I don’t get grumpy or snack on sweets. Partner says “you seem to like me more”. Also started getting soymilk in my morning latte, heard it helps balance hormones.

Beginning week 5: I think I’m on run 6 now. Still hate running, but, I’m down to 161 today, and I was 163 three days ago, so thats 6lbs down, which feels real. No spotting yet. I feel like I finally have some willpower, maybe some success-inertia. It’s not as hard to say no to the sweet thing. Portion sizes are finally what they ought to be and i’m happy with that. My ‘cheats’ are tiny compared to what they used to be and I also find I’m not spending 85% of my mental energy every day telling myself how much I suck. I feel more relaxed.

Re: weight loss: I do not think you’ll lose weight automatically by getting off minera. You still have to watch your portions and avoid sugar/starch. You still need to move more than you used to move, and it took me 4 weeks of eating less/better and moving more/harder to see something noticeable. I had to run 12 miles! I had to eat a cup of food or two less per day! My partner agreed to work out (on his own) during this timeframe too, which helped, and my place of work includes healthy lunches I can portion for yourself, so I have some advantages you may not have. YMMV. What Mirena leaving *did* give me was motivation, either in not giving me hormones that made me sad and tired all the time, or in removing my last excuse to be lazy and fat.

You who are posting “OMG I can’t wait to get mine removed” are ruining the reply feed for people with actual helpful stories to share. Please stop with the “This thing is awful” “getting mine out tomorrow” “wow, now I know why I feel crappy” posts. It sucks to wade through twelve useless bandwagon posts for every one actual record of removal experience. You have nothing helpful to add, so stop it.

5 days off of the mirena, bled like crazy until today, then I noticed all the bloating was gone, no hives or rashes due to heat or intercourse, no back pain and my acne is starting to clear already! I've had it for a little over a year and a half and it was absolutely crazy although I have lost 20 lbs since march, I've lost 5 more just within the week!! I've had a bad run with the mirena but I'll never do that again, my husband had his vasectomy done in November so there's really no use for it now, mainly because I want another baby lol 1% chance but regardless I'm feeling better than I have since my second child and the energy I have now is phenomenal!!!

Omgosh I am so glad I found this page!! I thought I was going crazy! I am 28 and I have had my mirena for about 4 years now. I have always been a little on the heavy side, but was dieting and excercising again after I met my now husband. We have a lot of similiar interests like hiking and walking but most of my friends aren't into that stuff and I had gotten away from it and didn't realize just how bad out of shape I had gotten until I went walking with him and was out of breath much faster than I used to be. I had started dieting and in the first year lost 35 points and was at about 215 when I went on the pill. But after having complications with it I was put on the mirena after my doctor and I discussed that the weight loss was just as important to me. He swore I wouldn't have any trouble because of the iud and that I should be able to lose the weight no problem. Despite continuing my dieting I have gained almost 60 pounds. I have had 3 different personal trainers and 2 nutritionists at a loss as to why I wasn't losing weight and even gaining it. as well as my womens health and primary care doctor telling me that maybe I need to change my diet and just excersize more. I was at the gym 6 days a week doing an hour of zumba in the morning and returning in the evenings with my husband and doing an hour on the eliptical and while I stopped gaining I still wasn't losing weight. I didn't start losing weight until I tried the hcg diet and was only eating 5-700 calories a day and going to the gym 2x a day six days a week and even then I only lost 15 pounds and gained it all and then some back since. I have been struggling to find an answer for all this time and I feel like this is my aha! Moment!! I am so glad that you all have shared your stories, because I thought I maybe was missing something. I am currently at 265 pounds which is more than I was when I started dieting in the first place. I am having my mirena removed on August third. I will update this post in a month, and let you know how it's helped or not.

One of the greatest moments in this world is when you see your own wife put to bed, this awesome moments makes you a man and not just a man a real man. My wife suffered from Fibroid which made her unable to get pregnant and give us a child for almost 18 years with multiple surgeries done and none seemed to help the situation. I almost gave up but due to the love i had for her because i married her a virgin i had to find a way to help her. I told a member of my church who recommended Dr. lewishill to me, i contacted him and he sent me a medicine and this medicine shrieked it naturally in weeks it was like magic but it's science. I am happy writing this because she delivered yesterday a baby girl. in case you need his helping hand email him directly via his email,

"Taken". I recommend a pregnancy test because periods that are not on time, doesn't necessarily mean you are pregnant. Stress is a big favor in irregular periods. I do know it can take longer to get pregnant if you had it in for a long time.

I have gained 35 pounds in a year and 4 months. This is not like me at all. My diet and exercise has improved and I really don't eat bad all the time. I'm mindful of my carb intake and try to eat more veggies and Whole Foods. I went to my doctor to inquire about getting my blood checked and will do that but during my visit my doctor said she believes it is the IUD. Even though most people don't gain a lot of weight and the IUD has low hormones, the type of hormones is not working for my body. Compared to the pill, I gained no more than a few pounds, if that. I have decided to get the IUD removed and can come back to post results.
